POOLE TOWN 0

WEYMOUTH maintained their perfect record in pre-season with a comfortable 4-0 dismissal of Poole at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

The Terras announced England Under-19 keeper Jack Bycroft had joined the club on loan from Southampton prior to kick-off, and the young Saint was a spectator for most of the match.

Poole’s best chance of the opening half came when former Portland striker Bailey Rowe was tripped 20 yards out, ex-Terra Josh Carmichael then curling the free-kick over.

In the 10th minute, Weymouth won a similar free-kick in identical circumstances when Jordan Ngalo was felled, but Andreas Robinson narrowly bent his effort over the right-hand post.

A tepid half was ignited in the 27th minute when Ben Thomson was barged over the box, leading to Terras’ captain Josh McQuoid drilling the spot-kick past ex-Weymouth keeper Mark Childs.

Weymouth grew into the half following the goal and Brennan Camp was unlucky not to create an opening from an enterprising run to the Poole byline, his drag back evading all Weymouth shirts.

Brian Stock’s men again went close just before the break, with McQuoid earning a cheap free-kick which Jake McCarthy troubled Childs with, via a slight deflection.

Both teams again struggled for fluency after kick-off, but sub Jack Hoey tried to inject some pace into the game with a shot on the turn – only to shoot at Childs.

Camp then controlled skilfully on the stretch to set up a searching move, culminating in sub Alefe Santos powering an attempt wide of the near post.

Capitalising on their dominance, the hosts went 2-0 up in fortuitous circumstances when Childs parried a strong low cross into the path of Robinson to bury a finish from six yards.

Young sub midfielder Harry Burns received a glorious chance for 3-0 seconds after replacing Robinson but his scuffed finish bobbled wide from sub Tom Whelan’s cutting through ball.

Weymouth did notch their third with sharp one-touch football as Santos’ first-time pass set Hoey through and the forward’s shot was deadly, spearing past Childs into the far corner.

Carmichael scuffed an ambitious 30-yard drive at Bycroft before Whelan added Weymouth’s fourth, neatly threading his shot through a crowd of advancing defenders into the bottom-left corner.
