JOHN Godbold will start with a “blank canvas” at Bridport, the new Bees manager said.

Godbold was on Sunday appointed as successor to outgoing boss Jamie Manley and assistant Kevin Leigh.

Former Wimbledon and Chelsea defender Godbold has already stated his desire to work with the Bees’ young talent due to his strong background in coaching.

And he is eager, despite having a tough job on his hands, to impart his knowledge onto the Bees’ squad.

He said: “It’s not easy, but that’s quite appealing. Then it’s down to what you do and what you produce – it really is starting with a blank canvas.

“I have great belief in my ability to coach and work with players. That’s what it’s given me – a challenge without a doubt.

“The chairman (Adrian Scadding) phoned within an hour and said: ‘Right, you’re on board. Let’s really go for this.’

“I was really impressed with the club and everyone involved. You’ve seen it go through a whole range of managers.

“It’s been a struggle for a few years, definitely. So that’s where we’re at.

“Obviously the Covid situation makes it difficult because you want to get cracking straight away.”
