WEYMOUTH 3

Cooke 16, McQuoid 32 pen, Jordan 53

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 2

Orsi 43, 45+1

WEYMOUTH reached the fourth round of the FA Trophy with a determined 3-2 win over Maidenhead United at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

The Terras led 2-0 thanks to Cody Cooke's tap-in and a penalty from Josh McQuoid - the skipper's fourth goal in five games.

But Daniel Orsi scored twice in three minutes at the end of the half to restore parity for the Magpies.

Corey Jordan's prodded finish proved the winner as Weymouth closed the game out in a nervy finale, ending a run of five straight defeats.

Weymouth boss Brian Stock, who was on the touchline despite his red card after Tuesday’s galling 3-2 loss to Wrexham, made four changes to the side that began that game.

Gerard Benfield replaced keeper Jack Bycroft, while Alefe Santos, Jack Hoey and Cody Cooke also came in.

Missing out were striker Ben Thomson (ankle), defender Josh Leslie-Smith (blurred vision) and Sean Shields (hamstring).

However, the Terras were unable to name a full squad of 16 players with first-team coach Sammy Lander listed on the bench alongside the returning Jack Dickson, Ade Olumuyiwa, Andy Robinson plus Bycroft.

With half the squad injured, skipper and forward McQuoid played in central midfield with Jake McCarthy at centre-half.

In the previous game at the Bob Lucas between the sides, Maidenhead took a 5-0 victory back in 2009 and that tally was almost matched in a bizarre first half.

Following a minute's silence for former Terra Johnny Hannigan, low quality typified the opening period as neither side had a meaningful shot on target in the first 15 minutes.

Out of the blue, Weymouth took the lead in the 16th minute as Cooke chased a long ball and nipped in front of the advancing Maidenhead keeper Josh Oluwayemi before walking the ball into the net.

Zaid Al-Hussaini was his usual busy self on the right and nearly won a penalty when away skipper Alan Massey tripped the winger, who then lashed the set-piece out near the corner flag.

Emerging through the poor quality was Hoey, who neatly knitted the Terras’ attacking play together with a series of clever passes.

Another good touch released the ball into space but his cross was just above the unmarked Cooke before Sam Barratt forced Benfield into a sharp stop at the other end.

But just past the half hour mark, Weymouth won a penalty courtesy of more solid work from Hoey, who set Cooke through on goal.

Although the former St Mirren striker saw his shot saved by Oluwayemi, the ball fell to Santos whose heavy touch ironically worked in his favour as Manny Parry clattered into the Brazilian to concede a penalty.

McQuoid then stepped up to emphatically fire to the right of Oluwayemi as Weymouth doubled their lead.

Barratt slashed over and Oluwayemi dropped an Ollie Harfield cross as Maidenhead struggled for a spark.

However, it came through Orsi with two minutes of the first period to go, the striker neatly flicking past the Terras’ defence and rifling past Benfield from 10 yards.

Bad habits came home to roost again for Weymouth as the hosts wasted a two-goal lead for the second game in succession, Orsi chesting down a diagonal ball and slamming past Benfield in first-half injury-time.

It was the fifth goal Weymouth have conceded in first-half stoppage-time this season.

Maidenhead came out in the second half with more intent and Shaun Donnellan’s piledriver was palmed clear by Benfield at full-stretch before the midfielder punted inches wide soon after.

Shaking off the Magpies’ promising resumption, Weymouth regained the lead in the 53rd minute.

McQuoid set the attack in motion, his deflected shot winning a corner which was then nodded behind for a second set-play.

Santos swung in the delivery and Oluwayemi was again unconvincing, allowing Jordan to poke in from six yards through a crowd of bodies.

Worryingly for the home fans, Weymouth then began to sit back – just as they did when Wrexham fought back to win late on.

Maidenhead made an attacking double substitution with 21 minutes left as Alex Addai and Josh Smile came on for Josh Coley and Barratt respectively.

Stock also looked to his bench for fresh legs as Dickson came on for his Weymouth debut, replacing the injured Al-Hussaini.

Hoey, who was easily Weymouth’s best player, slipped Cooke through one-on-one again but the shaky Oluwayemi stood up well to make a crucial save.

Hoey collected the rebound and won a free-kick as Parry handled, but McCarthy’s free-kick curled just over.

Maidenhead still carried a threat in the closing stages as Donnellan rattled the crossbar and George Wells thundered the ricochet at Benfield.

Weymouth tired in the finale and Hoey went down blaming cramp with the Terras two minutes from victory.

Jordan made a brave tackle in the third minute of stoppage-time and Addai was poised to head home the resulting corner only for Parry to flick the ball out of reach.

Weymouth cleared their lines twice beyond the five allotted minutes before referee Daniel Lamport brought an end to the nerves, the Terras collecting £4,500 for reaching the fourth round.
