WEYMOUTH must box “clever” on expenditure given the current uncertainty over the National League season, according to boss Brian Stock.

Yesterday, the National League announced a two-week suspension to Step 2 competition, with the North and South divisions halting play immediately.

It comes after around a quarter of the league’s 66 member clubs publicly signalled their preference to suspend fixtures, citing concerns over funding and Covid-19 testing.

At present, the National League is unaffected, but Weymouth are wisely keeping a close eye on financial outgoings.

Ahead of hosting Hartlepool today (3pm), Stock highlighted the need for caution with players coming in or going out of the Terras’ setup.

He told Echosport: “At this moment in time we have to be careful what we’re doing.

“At the end of the day, if we’re going to be going into a null and void season, we need to make sure that the expenditure is at its lowest.

“In terms of players coming in and out, and the season carrying on, it might be that we have to be a little bit clever on that front.

“As it stands, these have been the stumbling blocks for one or two players that need fitness and games.

“Like what Myles Anderson did (at Hampton & Richmond) earlier on in the season to go out (on loan) and get some games.

“It’s been a stumbling block for us to go and free up money. It’s worked as a negative for players and the club in terms of bringing in money.”
