WEYMOUTH boss Brian Stock admitted Sutton United second goal “knocked the stuffing” out of the Terras during a 2-0 loss at a blustery Gander Green Lane.

Stock’s men were the 12th visiting team to be beaten by Sutton in the Vanarama National League as the Amber and Chocolates underlined their title credentials.

Leaders Torquay could only draw 0-0 at home to Bromley, meaning Sutton could overtake the Gulls by winning their game in hand.

Craig Eastmond’s well-taken first-half header and a venomous drive from Donovan Wilson ensured Weymouth left south London empty-handed, albeit still in 18th place.

Speaking to Echosport, Stock praised the quality of opposition.

“When you look at both sides you can see why they’re up at the top and where we are,” he said.

“They’re a very dominant side and the league itself is very demanding.

“The intensity they play at right through 90 minutes is hard to contain.

“When you mix that in with the conditions (wind and 3G pitch) it’s a different aspect when it comes to playing games.

“They’re a good side and scored a fantastic second goal which knocked the stuffing out of us.

“From then on it really looked like there was only going to be one outcome, even though at half-time I was confident we could get something from the game.”

Weymouth's only clear sight of goal came in the fourth minute as former Liverpool keeper Dean Bouzanis denied Sean Shields.

Stock said: “They’re relentless, give them a lot of credit. They compete very well and don’t take any chances. You can see why they’ve only conceded seven in the last 10 at home.

“They’ll go close to winning the league this year.”

Weymouth made numerous blocks and tackles to try and withstand Sutton’s weaponry.

Stock said: “In terms of us, we put our bodies on the line and defended very well.

“If one or two chances (went in), in particular Sean Shields, it could’ve been a different game.

“You’re not going to come to Sutton and not defend for your lives. Every single team in this league has done the same.

“They’ve only lost three, it’s a really tough place to come. They played intelligent balls across our box which warranted us to go and press and put bodies on the line.

“I felt we did that and Ethan (Ross) only had two or three saves. I’m not saying the outcome would’ve been any different because I felt we were second best.

“It didn’t look like we were ever going to score.”

Weymouth had appeals for a penalty and second booking for Kenny Davis turned down for a challenge on Andy Dallas.

Questioned on the incident, Stock played a straight bat: “I couldn’t really see from where I was.

“It was very close, probably right on the edge and could’ve been given either way. It was a clear foul, but I don’t think it was a yellow card.”
