WEYMOUTH boss Brian Stock is encouraged by the Terras’ fighting spirit ahead of a trip to Solihull Moors in the Vanarama National League tonight (7pm).

Stock’s players trailed Sutton United 2-0 on Saturday when striker Ben Thomson went off with a recurrence of a groin strain, leaving the Terras with 10 men.

And the determination of the Weymouth squad during a difficult contest gave Stock positive vibes for tonight’s game.

He told Echosport: “The most pleasing thing was that the boys didn’t throw in the towel, even with 10 men.

“We still kept on trying to play. It was probably our best period when we went down to 10, we kept possession better than we did with 11.

“They didn’t chuck the towel in, which is massive for me. As soon as I see that, that’s a negative I don’t like in a player and team.

“We’ve shown on many occasions we can bounce back from defeats and score late on.

“We need to make sure we dust ourselves down and go again. Solihull’s going to be a tough game, especially on a Tuesday.

“We’re asking players to sacrifice work commitments.”

Weymouth drew 0-0 with Solihull in the reverse fixture as Andy Dallas missed a penalty.

Asked what he expects from the Moors this time round, Stock said: “They had a little dip in form and they’ve picked themselves up again.

“They play football well, interchange well but the results they’ve picked up recently have been positive.

“Any game away from home for us on a Tuesday night is going to be tough. I’ve brought off Andy and Josh McQuoid (against Sutton) because I want to keep them fresh.”

Ben Morgan (hamstring) will miss the rest of the season and Thomson (groin) will likely not be risked.

Giving an update on Thomson, Stock added: “It looks like Thommo is going to be struggling.

“He’s had to come off and he’s not one to shirk away from an injury. If he does go round, we know it’s serious.

“He wanted to try and carry on but we didn’t want him to do it badly. We’ll see how he settles down but he’s very unlikely.

“You’ve got players we have to make sure we look after on a regular basis with training, like Calvin Brooks.

“We have to make sure he doesn’t do too much because his (knee) symptoms become a lot worse when he plays on a 3G. We’ll have to make sure he’s good to go.”

Elsewhere, the National League is in consultations with its members clubs over a return for home spectators from Monday, May 17.
