WEYMOUTH chairman Ian White has hailed the Terras’ achievement of finishing above the bottom three on merit.

Due to the curtailment of Step 2, no relegation will take place from the Vanarama National League this season.

In an interview with Echosport earlier in the campaign, White maintained his belief that Weymouth would finish outside of the drop zone – relegation or not.

And the Terras’ supremo praised Weymouth’s playing and management staff after a 2-1 win over Altrincham confirmed a finish of 19th or higher – on the club’s first season in this league since 2009.

White said: “When you asked me about no relegation I said it didn’t really worry me because I knew we could possibly finish above the bottom three.

“Now Woking and King’s Lynn can’t catch us and Wealdstone have got to go some to catch us as well.

“I knew they could do it. I’m so pleased for Brian and the players.”

Weymouth now have a genuine chance of finishing as the highest-placed promoted side, but must gain three points in two games on Altrincham.

That accolade looks tricky to obtain following the 3-1 loss to Boreham Wood on Tuesday.

White said: “I think we’ve made it a bit more difficult now.

“It’s a tough task going away to Notts County and Hartlepool, but to be honest we’ve played better against the bigger teams.

“Who knows? We’ve beaten Stockport twice and Hartlepool (at home), so we’re going for a double at Hartlepool.

“The lads will just give all they can.”
