DORCHESTER Town manager Robbie Herrera will be looking for a quicker tempo from his players against Buckland Athletic tomorrow (3pm).

Herrera’s men welcome the Bucks, who play two divisions below in the Western League, to the Avenue Stadium for their third pre-season friendly.

Dorchester beat Christchurch 5-0 last time out, following a 1-1 draw with Hamworthy United.

Asked for the improvements he wishes to see following those games, Herrera told Echosport: “The tempo of the passing, timing of movements – which we’ve worked on again this week.

“It’s just getting that ball moving quicker, sharper and players understanding their roles and responsibilities in the team, both in and out of possession.

“It’ll be much of the same we’ve been trying to implement in the last few games.”

He added: “It’s getting the minutes, the work in. We’ve got the heart rate monitors and everything to check out whereabouts we are fitness-wise. That’s great.

“I know quite a few of the Buckland players because they’re Torquay-based and Newton Abbot-based and they’re all good players in their own right.

“It’ll be a tough game but one we look forward to.”

Former Premier League midfielder Tom Soares (hamstring) is the Magpies’ only injury doubt.

Dorchester have also been in talks to sign a goalkeeper and a centre-half this week.

On the defender, Herrera said: “I’ve been talking to a body for the last few days.

“If I can get him in, it’ll be a great addition to the squad, not only for what he brings as a player but also his professionalism and the way he conducts himself.

“I’m hoping the lads will look upon that and see how he lives his life, how he does the right things to improve – even though he’s an experienced player.

“I’m hoping that will rub off on some of the younger lads.”

Elaborating on the goalkeeper talks, Herrera added: “We’re quite close. I’m just waiting because he’s playing pre-season games for his parent club.

“We’d obviously like to get him in and get a couple of games with us before we kick-off.

“Whether that’s going to be feasible or not I don’t know. After the conversation last week, things are pressing ahead.

“I’ve just got to wait for them to give us a nod and say: ‘Yeah, you can take him.’”
