WEYMOUTH have signed central midfielder Xander McBurnie for the 2021/22 Vanarama National League season.

McBurnie, 23, is the younger brother of Sheffield United and Scotland striker Oli McBurnie.

McBurnie has previous National League nous having spent the past 18 months with Barnet and has also played for Swedish side Ytterhogdals IK - the fourth tier of Swedish football.

Weymouth manager Brian Stock has moved to sign McBurnie after impressive performances in the Terras' four pre-season matches while on trial.

He is the former Wales international's 17th signing of the summer.

Speaking to uptheterras.co.uk, Stock said: "Xander was somebody who was made available to us quite some time ago, he's a player that we were very keen to sign and had to be patient with.

"He possesses a fantastic passing range with either foot, he's intelligent and what I want from my midfield players is to be able to get themselves on the ball and Xander will do that in areas that others might shy away from.

"He will be pivotal for us in terms of playing as a holding midfield player. We've seen glimpses of his abilities in the last two home games against Exeter City and Swindon Town.

"We are delighted to secure Xander for the season."

McBurnie could make his first appearance as a fully-fledged Weymouth player at Dorchester Town on Saturday (3pm).
