BRIDPORT manager Rob Marquis confessed the Bees are sometimes their “own worst enemy” following a 4-0 home defeat to Wellington.

Goals from Glen Wright, Jake Quick, Jordan Casey and Nathan Byrnes gave Wellington all three points at St Mary’s Field.

But Bridport missed good chances of their own, notably Christian Blango when unmarked six yards out and Mike Hill’s sliced finish – both the first half.

Bridport midfielder Dom McAllister was also unfortunate to hit the bar twice as the rub of the green deserted the hosts.

Post-match, Marquis said: “We could do better. I think they were a better side than the side I saw Boxing Day, quite a different side.

“At times our decision-making wasn’t as good as it could be. I won’t dig players out – some of these lads are early in their careers.

“We lack experience in certain areas of the field but I’m not a quitter. We’ve got to think this one through.

“I feel sometimes when we get possession we feel we’ve got to get rid of it and that’s a tell-tale sign we’re in trouble.

“We don’t want the ball and sometimes we’re our own worst enemy because if we were a little more composed with the ball we’d help ourselves.

“As always, I think the goals tend to come from something we’ve potentially done wrong or failed to do better.

“I think our defence is very good, believe it or not. People will look at that and say: ‘how can you say that?’

“But we’ve got to help them out further up the pitch and look to improve.”

He added: “Hopefully we can settle the team selection more because we keep moving and changing. We’ve got a few things to sort out.

“I’m disappointed but myself and Shaun (Annetts, assistant) have got to look at ourselves as well. I take responsibility.

“On a positive note, we’ve hit the crossbar twice, we’ve had one cleared off the line and Blango’s was a good save.

“Maybe he shouldn’t have given the keeper a chance but realistically we’ve had four near goals.

“One of those would get our noses in front, like Ashton & Backwell, that goal was such a settler.

“We have got the capability but getting the right blend will make the difference. It’s moving those pieces around correctly.”
