WEYMOUTH legend Jason Matthews has returned to the Terras, replacing departed goalkeeping coach Robbie Yates.

Former Weymouth boss Mark Molesley has tempted Yates to National League counterparts Aldershot Town on a full-time basis.

For Matthews, his return to the Bob Lucas Stadium comes after more than four years away from the club when he fulfilled a player/manager role.

And the triangle continues as Molesley - who led Weymouth to back-to-back promotions in 2019 and 2020 - was Matthews' successor in 2017.

In a brief statement, Weymouth thanked Yates for his services while welcoming back Matthews, who was present for the FA Cup replay loss to Yeovil on Tuesday.

"We can confirm that goalkeeper coach Robbie Yates has decided to leave the club following an opportunity to join Aldershot Town and work full-time in football," the Terras said.

"Robbie was a pivotal part of the club's return to the National League and will be missed.

"Following Robbie’s decision to leave, the club have acted swiftly to recruit Terras legend Jason Matthews with immediate effect.

"Jason returns to the club following spells at Bath City, Chippenham Town and more recently Bracknell. Welcome home Jase!"

Matthews has also played for Exeter City, Dorchester Town, Bath City and Aberystwyth in a career spanning 22 years.

Yates will have a swift reunion with Weymouth this coming Tuesday when the Terras travel to Aldershot. Before that, Brian Stock's men host Wealdstone tomorrow (3pm).
