DORCHESTER TOWN 3

Purrington 47, Hanger 55, Stanley 90+3

WIMBORNE TOWN 0

DORCHESTER Town claimed their second straight home win and clean sheet with a comfortable 3-0 win over Dorset counterparts Wimborne Town at the Avenue Stadium.

After a first half only kept goalless by a fabulous display from Wimborne keeper Ryan Hall and his far post, Sam Bayston denied by the woodwork, Dorchester cut loose in the second half.

On 47 minutes, Tom Purrington netted his second goal in a week, quickly followed by Oakley Hanger’s maiden strike of the season.

Alfie Stanley then sealed the points in stoppage-time to defeat bottom-of-the-table Wimborne, who only had one shot on target.

Before another encouraging display, Dorchester boss Glenn Howes made one change to the starting XI that began Saturday's 2-0 win over Kings Langley.

Tom Soares came in for Charlie Madden, who was substituted with a slight knock in the victory over Lango.

New signing Billy Stedman was on the bench, along with the returning Flavio Tavares.

Centre-back Sam Davidson, versatile defender Madden and winger Christos Papakonstantinou were Howes' other options from the dugout.

Wimborne showed three changes from the side that began the 2-1 win over Weston-super-Mare in the FA Trophy first round on Saturday.

Connell Morrison, Callum Chugg and Jamie Henry were the men to make way for Scott Arnold, new signing Jez Bedford and Jake Carswell.

In the previous meeting between the sides, current Wimborne boss James Stokoe scored an early own goal as Dorchester won 1-0 – 16 days before the first national lockdown.

And another early goal seemed likely as Dorchester made a fast start to this game.

Wimborne’s Mark Jamison headed awkwardly at his own keeper Hall, who got down low to palm clear with Bayston lurking.

Hall made another good save in the 10th minute when Dorchester carved the visitors open from a throw-in, Bayston playing in Stanley who shot at Hall from an acute angle.

Hall then parried a low cross from the industrious Kieran Roberts, Bayston collecting and seeing his shot cleared off the line.

Wimborne replied when Lewis Beale threatened on the break but Dorchester hit the post when Bayston’s poke was brushed away by Hall’s fingertips.

Bayston was denied by Hall again before Wimborne’s first shot on anger whistled wide from Jake Carswell.

Soares was OK to continue after a nasty accidental boot to face and Wimborne had their first shot on target when former Cuthbury man Gerard Benfield pushed Lewis Beale’s rasping drive clear.

Roberts shot across the face of goal before Hall made a miraculous save on the line to deny Soares’ steered effort from a low Roberts cross.

For all Dorchester’s chances they could not find that elusive goal in the first half – but it took less than two minutes of the second to make the breakthrough.

Hanger raced down the right, unleashed by Thiago Caze da Silva’s fine pass, and his low cross was inexplicably left by the Wimborne defence, Purrington nipping in to sweep high into the roof of the net.

Stanley was denied by a fine block from ex-Dorchester centre-half Dan Strugnell and Bayston bobbled an effort wide before the hosts deservedly went 2-0 up.

Hanger latched on to a pinpoint ball over the top, controlled and curled home a crisp finish just inside the far post to register his first goal of the season.

Moments later, Stanley was in for number three, only for Hall to stand tall and block his effort.

Wimborne improved midway through the half as Billy Maybury and Bedford both had shots deflected behind.

However, Benfield rarely had a save to make and Dorchester substitutes Tavares and Stedman nearly combined in the 86th minute, only for the latter to be tackled near the byline.

Late on, Roberts cut inside from the left but the impressive Hall had an easy gather.

In the third minute of injury-time, Roberts ghosted clear and produced a parry from Hall, the rebound swept home by a grateful Stanley who sealed the points with a simple finish.

Dorchester fully merited their second straight home win and clean sheet as the Magpies moved up to 16th, while Wimborne were left languishing at the foot of the table.
