BRIAN Stock made special mention of goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons’ performance following Weymouth’s 2-1 loss to Torquay United on Saturday.

Fitzsimons made a number of impressive stops to keep the Gulls at bay, including a fine one-on-one save, using his legs to defy Sinclair Armstrong.

Perhaps best of all was his flying stop to deny a Klaidi Lolos header at close quarters, the former Notts County and Chesterfield custodian pushing his attempt onto the bar.

Despite Fitzsimons’ best efforts, the keeper remains on two clean sheets for the season having played 20 games in all competitions.

However, Fitzsimons has often come to Weymouth’s rescue this season with crucial stops, including a 120th-minute penalty save against Yeovil to keep their FA Cup replay alive before the Terras eventually exited the competition.

But Terras’ manager Stock was quick to applaud the 27-year-old following his display against Torquay.

He told Echosport: “Do you know what, he deserves to be picked out for special praise.

“He’s made some vital saves for us and that’s not just (Saturday), that’s been the case over the last few games.

“He came under a little bit of stick for the first few games of the season, Ross held his hands up and said he was going to change his mindset.

“He’s worked extremely hard on and off the pitch. For me, the last six or seven games he’s looked a different goalkeeper.

“He’s one that’s kept the boys in the game and he’s got distribution to go with saving shots. I’m pleased with him.”

Elsewhere, Weymouth raised £500 for the Weymouth Veterans Hub courtesy of a collection during the Torquay game.
