WEYMOUTH have been forced to postpone their Boxing Day clash with Eastleigh and their derby with Yeovil two days later due to Covid-19 cases at the Terras.

Brian Stock’s men were due to host Eastleigh at the Bob Lucas Stadium and visit Huish Park on Tuesday.

That was until centre-back Ben Morgan missed the 1-0 FA Trophy win at Hungerford Town due to Covid-19.

Weymouth have now reported further cases and, adding to a lengthy injury list the Dorset side have been left with no alternative but to reschedule the game – a date for which is yet to be confirmed.

Weymouth are remaining tight-lipped on how many players are affected, but the number is sufficient to put paid to the fixtures under National League rules.

Echosport understands the situation is less severe than last season’s outbreak, which swept through the entire Weymouth squad.

Speaking to Echosport, vice-chairman Paul Maitland said: “I’m not going to say which players because that’s against their rights.

“We have followed National League and EFL protocols for the past six weeks now.

“Even so, it’s still hit us. We’ve taken every precaution we could, reassessed how we train, where we train, how we’ve travelled.

“We’ve changed many things over the last six-week period to try and avoid this situation.

“Unfortunately, the spread is nationwide. Nobody’s avoiding it. You only have to look at the number of fixtures off across the League to see it’s not just a problem for us – it’s the Premier League down.

“We’ve been in consultation with the National League for the last couple of days as soon as we realised we were going to have issues.

“Fortunately they’ve been sensible and worked with us on the situation. We’ve even looked at adding additional players to the squad.

“Because of Covid, clubs have been reluctant to loan players to protect themselves, which you can understand.

“Having suffered greatly last year we’re keen to minimise that risk to the playing squad again. They’ve been proactive in trying to avoid any unnecessary contacts.”
