DORCHESTER Town showed an “unbelievable amount of character” to claim a 1-1 draw against Truro City in stoppage-time, boss Glenn Howes insisted.

Trailing to Tyler Harvey’s goal on the hour, Dorchester looked set to book a sixth straight league loss.

However, experienced full-back Ashley Wells surfaced in the area to tuck home Oakley Hanger’s pinpoint pass in the 93rd minute, stopping the losing run.

Dorchester’s draw also widened to four points the gap to Kings Langley and the Pitching In Southern League Premier South relegation zone.

Speaking to Dorchester’s media team post-match, Howes said: “I definitely think they deserved that, the lads.

“They’ve showed a great amount of courage, patience and perseverance in their play.

“So many times when you’re chasing the game there’s a habit of going direct too soon, but their build-up play was really patient.

“The tempo fluctuated but that’s natural the position we’re in. After Truro got their goal we were licking our wounds and looking around at each other.

“After that five, 10-minute period we got ourselves together, we rallied, showed an unbelievable amount of character and personality to go and take the game to Truro again.”

Howes believes the result can lift Dorchester’s spirits after a difficult January thus far.

He said: “Obviously it’s great to have a point to add to your tally but it’s what it can do to the spirit and confidence.

“People might think we’re harping on with the same messages, but we have to keep driving those messages in.

“We genuinely believe we’re not far away from being a very good Southern League side, not just a Southern League side that is here to compete.

“We think we’re not far away as a group.”

Howes also praised the Magpies’ faithful for their support.

“I felt the support and the crowd were exceptional towards the end," he said. "There is patience in and around this club, which is nice to see and hear.

“If they like that after a point, and I know it feels like a victory because of the timing, we feel we want more of those moments.

“The boys certainly appreciate the support they get. It makes a massive difference. Nobody wants to be agitated, play with anxiety, people want to play with courage and confidence.

“Hopefully that can really push us on. We feel that will only add to the atmosphere of Dorchester Town Football Club.”
