WEYMOUTH WOMEN 1

REDLANDS LADIES 0

BECCA de Havilland’s first goal in a Terras shirt was enough to earn Weymouth Women a 1-0 victory over Redlands Ladies in the Dorset Women’s League.

De Havilland struck in the 57th minute to give her side the lead in a fiercely competed derby and the first meeting between the two Weymouth-based teams this season.

In a half of few chances, Weymouth had the first opportunity on 10 minutes when Charlie Wilson stung the palms of Redlands goalkeeper Renee Marquis.

Shortly afterwards Redlands had a penalty appeal waved away before Kristina Manktelow had the next big opportunity of the game.

Dani Ackerman’s corner was cleared to Manktelow who half-volley whistled wide of the post.

It was then Redlands turn to apply the pressure with a series of corners, but Weymouth finished the half with a couple of opportunities of their own.

Lily Beasley looked to be through on goal but the quick thinking of Marquis prevented the Weymouth forward from reaching the penalty box, the young Redlands keeper rushed off her line and made a superb sliding tackle on edge of the area.

When Weymouth tried the same move minutes later, Beasley was this time able to round Marquis, but Lois Collins managed to track back and get herself in between Beasley’s shot and the goal.

The second half saw both sides have massive opportunities to claim the victory, the first fell to Redlands’ Olivia Conning, she had the Terras’ defence and goalkeeper beaten but her shot bounced back off the post.

Three minutes later it was Weymouth’s turn to hit the woodwork, Naomi Johnson’s shot from range deceived everybody but cannoned back off the crossbar.

The ultimately decisive goal came in the 57th minute, Redlands half-cleared an Ackerman free-kick which fell perfectly to de Havilland just inside the area, Marquis did manage to get a hand to the strike, but it was hit with so much venom that it dropped into the back of the next.

Weymouth quickly had a chance to double their lead, Ash Taylor’s back-post header set Ackerman, but Ackerman’s shot glanced the upright on its way wide.

Howard almost added the Terras’ second, she lobbed the advancing keeper but again it was narrowly wide for Weymouth.

Redlands had one more golden chance before full-time, Kerrie Dyer’s shot beat Kate Osment at full stretch, but for the fourth time in the game, the woodwork was struck.
