WEYMOUTH manager David Oldfield insisted the sorry 3-0 loss at fellow bottom-three side King’s Lynn Town is not “defining” for the Terras.

Following on from an impressive display at rivals Yeovil in midweek, Weymouth looked off their usual standards as Malachi Linton won and converted a penalty midway through the first half.

Weymouth improved in the second 45 but could not seriously test home keeper Paul Jones.

Instead, two goals in six minutes from Michael Clunan and Josh Barrett ensured the Linnets closed the gap to Weymouth in 21st to three points, while holding two games in hand.

Speaking to Echosport post-match, Oldfield admitted the Terras “struggled” at The Walks as they remain eight points from safety.

He said: “It was a very big game but they’re all going to be big.

“This is by no means a defining match. We need to make sure it certainly isn’t.

“We have done well since I’ve been in, the boys have responded, they’ve worked hard, they’ve done what I’ve asked them to do.

“We struggled and I take responsibility for that. We didn’t really get going, make the right decisions at the right times and we got what we deserved from the game.

“There were some fabulous fans here and we needed to make sure we saw them afterwards and showed them how much we appreciated them doing the journey.

“As much as I’ve spoken in the past about stepping forward, and we have done, we certainly halted that progression (on Saturday).

“But it’s about what happens next and our character and willingness to work for the cause. We’ll learn a lot about the boys going forward.”

Asked if the Terras had been jaded from their efforts at Yeovil, Oldfield said: “I can’t look for any excuses or reasons like that.

“We’ve prepared well, the boys had to recover this week. It’s a tough industry and there are many games on top of each other.

“We need to be as professional as we can. There is a responsibility on all of us to do the best we can at the times we’re not around the club.

“Certainly it was a very average performance from us and one we need to look back on carefully, not throw the baby out with the bath water though.

“There’ve been some really good performances up to now and we need to make sure we reflect properly and go again.”

Oldfield also reserved praise for top scorer and captain Josh McQuoid, who made his 100th club appearance at King’s Lynn.

He said: “He’s an important and influential person at the club. It’s a really good milestone.

“But we all get treated the same and we need to make sure nobody is guaranteed a position in the team.

“He’s been a big servant and he’s going to be very important going forwards.”
