WEYMOUTH boss David Oldfield praised his players as a group after the 1-0 win over Eastleigh, adding: “It was nice to get a reward for their hard work”.

Oldfield recorded his first victory as Weymouth boss courtesy of Brandon Goodship’s 71st-minute strike as the Terras claimed a merited win.

Home keeper Ross Fitzsimons had just two stops of note to make, saving low from Tom Broadbent’s header and then beating away a fierce effort from Ryan Hill.

Weymouth were at their creative best in a purple patch prior to the goal, with sub Tom Blair twice going close and Ahkeem Rose firing over.

In the end, their efforts halted a 13-game winless league run and backed up Saturday’s 1-1 draw with title hopefuls Chesterfield.

Oldfield told uptheterras.co.uk: “I have felt that we were moving forward and it was nice to manage to get over the line.

“We knew how hard the challenge was before the game. We knew that they haven’t won in a little bit but are on the way up.

“I’m in a similar position here, it’s just about the players and the work and how they applied themselves.

“We’ve done that previously and haven’t got over the line but (last night) we were fortunate enough.”

On Goodship’s winner, Oldfield added: “I’m happy to see anybody on the scoresheet!

“He took his goal very well, he’s a good player. There are some really good players in the group and it was nice to get a reward for their hard work because we haven’t had that previously.

“We need to go forward, prepare properly again and try and get our legs back for Saturday (at Altrincham).

“We didn’t get carried away when we hadn’t won and we still won’t get carried away now we’ve won. It’s a case of trying to prepare properly during the week.

“There’s a big responsibility for the players to recover and look after themselves. We just need to make sure that we get on with our work.”

Reacting to his first win at Weymouth, Oldfield said: “It’s nice to get a result, definitely.

“It’s nice for the players to have three points. The fans were so noisy and just buying into the players’ efforts – I think that’s very important.”

He added: “We all know we haven’t done enough. All I can control is what’s happened since I’ve been here.

“This is the seventh game and we’ve managed to win. It’s not a great record, let’s not be coy about it.

“The players showed attitude and willingness, coupled with some quality, scored a super goal, managed to defend, so it’s something that hopefully we can build on.”

Oldfield felt on balance Weymouth had deserved the win.

“I think in other games we possibly were deserving,” he said.

“It was a case (last night) of being a very tight game against a good side.

“I think we probably, maybe, did enough and we’re very pleased that we got over the line. We certainly did enough in terms of the players and the plaudits they deserve.”

Giving his final assessment on the Terras’ clean sheet, he said: “We have to defend together and score together.

“It’s a nice feeling to manage to get something. We won’t get carried away, we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.”
