ALTRINCHAM 5

Kosylo 10, 15, Cooper 27, Colclough 45+4, Mooney 87

WEYMOUTH 0

WEYMOUTH were hammered 5-0 by a rampant Altrincham as their quest for Vanarama National League survival was dealt a big blow.

The Terras had started superbly but two chances for Dan Smith and one for Brandon Goodship went begging.

Thereafter it was the Altrincham show as a classy double from Matty Kosylo set the Robins on their way.

Three injuries either side of Jake Cooper’s header for 3-0 hindered the Terras before Ryan Colclough’s low strike made it 4-0 at half-time to all but seal the three points.

Weymouth continued to fight in the second half but lacked a consolatory goal they perhaps deserved, instead Dan Mooney notched a late fifth to book Weymouth’s heaviest league loss since the 7-2 thrashing by Chesham in February 2015.

Weymouth remain nine points off Aldershot in the final safe spot.

With the table equation in mind, the Terras needed a positive result and boss David Oldfield made four changes to the side that began the 2-0 loss to FC Halifax Town on Saturday.

Dropping to the bench were Josh McQuoid, Brad Ash, Mannie Mampala and Omar Mussa.

The quartet were replaced by Cameron Murray, Tom Bearwish and Goodship – all of whom had an illness that swept through the Terras' squad last week.

Tom Blair was the other new addition to the squad, rewarded for his bright display when coming off the bench against Halifax.

Weymouth's bench was entirely new compared to Saturday, with the dropped quartet joined by Ahkeem Rose, who is fit again after injury.

Weymouth last played Altrincham in November when things quickly went downhill.

Tom Bearwish was sent off for a foul as last man on 23 minutes and Alty proceeded to take a 4-1 win.

On this occasion it took the Robins just 45 minutes to repeat their goalscoring feat against the Terras in a ghastly opening half for the visitors.

Weymouth actually did very little wrong aside from failing to score one of three excellent chances in the first 10 minutes.

Smith spurned two, forcing keeper Steve Drench into a brace of solid saves with centrally-placed shots.

Goodship was next to try his luck, working Drench into a diving stop from 18 yards.

However, a superlative goal from Kosylo set Altrincham on their way.

Picking up possession 25 yards out, there seemed little on but Kosylo plundered a thunderbolt into the far postage stamp from an acute angle for a breathtaking goal.

And 15 minutes in, Kosylo doubled his and Alty’s tally with another stunning strike, bending an effort round keeper Ross Fitzsimons into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

The Robins were suddenly on fire and Toby Mullarkey headed wide, Smith picking up a bloodied head in the aftermath.

Murray then cut his head in a clash of heads midway through the half, both him and Smith needing bandages and shirt changes.

Smith wore the set aside blood shirt, while Murray had to wear Ash’s jersey.

With Weymouth dazed by the two stoppages, Altrincham’s quality again shone through as Cooper rose highest to head home a Mooney free-kick for 3-0 in 27 minutes.

While the Robins had three goals, Weymouth had three injuries as Harvey Bunker was forced off, Mussa his replacement.

Weymouth’s defence had to be on guard to avoid conceding a fourth as Jordan Hulme slalomed towards goal before his shot was blocked.

Seven minutes of added time were required due to the injuries and Altrincham duly made it 4-0 in the fourth additional.

Hulme created space for Colclough and the winger still had plenty to do before unleashing another peach of a shot past Fitzsimons from 25 yards.

Weymouth trailed but had made no critical mistakes, Oldfield reaching for Rose at the break for the injured Smith.

The Jamaican was involved just 90 seconds after his introduction, firing over Drench’s bar from range.

Mussa tested Drench with a free-kick and Goodship blazed over from 20 yards as Weymouth showed heart in the face of an insurmountable deficit.

Alty always had the greater clinical edge as Mooney fired at Fitzsimons following a flowing move and Mullarkey headed wide again with 13 minutes to go.

Elliot Osborne was the latest to bring a save from Fitzsimons, his last-ditch acrobatic stop denying a goalbound shot with the home crowd off its feet in expectation of a fifth.

But Altrincham did notch number five with typical quality, Mooney finishing off an attractive team move.

The frustration in Weymouth’s ranks was evident as sub McQuoid saw yellow for a needless foul in the first minute of stoppage time.

In the end, Weymouth were left to lick their wounds from a horrid night on the road, with a massive clash at Wealdstone waiting on Saturday (3pm).
