GLENN Howes admitted he was “full of admiration” for his Dorchester side after claiming a huge 2-1 win at relegation rivals Kings Langley.

Dorchester came into the game trailing Lango by one point and then found themselves 1-0 down after 33 minutes courtesy of Bradley Wadkins’ well-taken one-on-one chance.

But the Magpies came roaring back with two goals in three minutes, completely changing the complexion of the game by the 51st minute.

Alfie Stanley was first to get his name on the scoresheet, biding his time before firing through a crowd of bodies for 1-1.

Harry McGrath was then perfectly placed to sweep home Dorchester’s second as the Magpies jumped out of the Pitching In Southern League Premier South bottom three.

With seven games to go they now possess the final safe position ahead of Lango by two points with a game in hand.

Howes told Echosport: “The manner we did it, coming from behind, the way we started the second half was brilliant.

“It was thoroughly deserved. I thought we showed a lot of composure, even when we went 1-0 down.

“There was a situation two weeks ago where we went 1-0 down against the run of play and all of a sudden the anxiety set in.

“It’s not great to go 1-0 down but the way we composed ourselves, we’re getting a belief and confidence.”

Sharing his thoughts on the magnitude of the victory in the context of the season, Howes said: “We sensed that with Swindon (Supermarine) a couple of weeks ago.

“You’ve got to use these situations and experience to your advantage. There’s no point performing and then not performing (tomorrow) night.

“We go away to Farnborough and there are seven games left. There’s a huge amount of points to play for.

“It’s a big win and big three points and it was almost a must-win game. I thought they handled the situation really well.”

Continuing on what was a hugely impressive second half, Howes added: “Our ball entries in central and wide areas are really good.

“The second-half performance was fantastic. When you score two goals you’re in the driving seat.

“You could see at 1-0 they were looking to see the game out. They slowed the play down immediately.

“The distances between their back four, midfield and forwards were deep. That spurred us on.

“I’m full of admiration for how they performed as a team. It’s great for Harry to get off the mark and for Alfie to get another goal.

“He showed great composure, he took his time but pulled the trigger at the right moment and deserved his goal.

“We tweaked his and Harry’s position after 20, 30 minutes and it paid dividends. The midfield three, the back four and the front three were really good in and out of possession.”

Howes was reluctant to pick out individual performances but did spare some praise for McGrath, whose maiden goal for the Magpies proved to be the match-winner.

“I feel a bit harsh naming names and individual performances,” he explained.

“As a team, we did perform. There were five 19-year-olds out there and our average age was 22, that bodes well for the future of the club if we can keep this group together.

“But it’s great to see Harry get his goal, he thoroughly deserved it.

“Sometimes you earn the right to get a goal and he certainly did that in terms of running in behind and pressing, just being a real nuisance for Kings Langley."

Dorchester visit title-chasing Farnborough tomorrow (7.45pm).
