“UPSET and annoyed” Weymouth boss David Oldfield admitted the Terras did not do themselves justice in the 2-0 Vanarama National League loss at Maidenhead United.

Matt Buse had a goal contentiously ruled out for offside before second-half goals from Shaun Donnellan and Josh Kelly condemned Weymouth to a seventh defeat in eight games.

More worryingly, Weymouth have failed to score seven times in eight matches and have slipped to 14 points behind Aldershot with only 21 left to play for.

The worst-case scenario for Weymouth is relegation at Notts County on Saturday, April 23 should they lose twice and Aldershot win twice.

However, Oldfield was more immediately concerned with Weymouth’s lack of ability to trouble Maidenhead.

He told Echosport: “We’re upset and annoyed, frustrated and disappointed. We didn’t do ourselves justice.

“We did many good things last week against Grimsby. This week we haven’t managed to affect the game anywhere near enough and we got what we deserved.

“We tried, we worked. As a group we have to stand together. We didn’t do enough and everybody is aware of that.

“It hurts, it stings and it was a difficult conversation after the game.

“We have to be absolutely realistic in what we are, take responsibility and keep fighting because we have another very important game on Monday.”

Quizzed on Weymouth’s timidity in front of goal, Oldfield refused to blame his forward-minded players.

“It’s not the attacking players, it’s us as a collective group,” he insisted.

“We’re not creating enough opportunities to enable us to get some goals and we’re not being clinical enough with the opportunities we do create.

“I do take responsibility for that, that’s a collective issue, it’s not a positional scenario.”

On Buse’s offside goal, Oldfield said: “I don’t know, frankly. It was on the side away from us.

“It looked like it rebounded and to be offside seems unfortunate but I honestly don’t know.”

He added: “We had plenty to fight for before then. You could argue we played a bit better after the goal we conceded.

“It’s not a case that we have to wait until we score to find out that we have something to fight for.

“It’s not a case of having to concede to find out that we have something to fight for.

“We have to work so hard together for the full game and we didn’t manage to do so.”

Looking at the quest for survival, Oldfield said: “We knew how difficult the task was when I first came in to the group.

“I haven’t managed to affect the results enough, that’s absolutely plain and clear.

“Whatever happens now is a moot point, we can’t control anything but ourselves. For us to perform as we did is another missed opportunity and a reality check about exactly where we are.

“I can’t comment on other teams, we have to take responsibility, keep working and fighting until the very last kick of the season.”

Oldfield must now pick the Terras up for the frenetic derby atmosphere against Yeovil on Monday (1pm), with Weymouth in desperate need of victory over their old rivals.
