WEYMOUTH must “regroup” and resolve their shortcomings after being relegated from the Vanarama National League, according to chairman Ian White.

The Terras went down last night after a 6-1 trouncing by Wrexham, the Red Dragons scoring six goals in 36 minutes in a scintillating second-half display.

Going into the game, Weymouth needed to better Aldershot’s result at Bromley, but former Weymouth boss Mark Molesley led the Shots to a 1-0 win over the Ravens.

It meant that Weymouth would have been relegated even if they had held on to a half-time lead given to them by Tom Bearwish’s second goal in two games.

The highest they can now finish is 21st, in the first of three relegation spots.

Speaking after taking the first drop since relegation to the Southern League in 2009/10, White addressed the might and power of teams in the National League.

He told Echosport: “We knew when we came into it two years ago, it was always going to be difficult.

“It’s not the National League that we remember 13 years ago – you’ve only got to look at our opponents.

“It’s tough but at least we try to play football the right way. It’s a blow, of course it is, but you have to be realistic.

“I’ve said it, when Dartford put three penalties over and we got into this league, I did say that with our current structure we couldn’t do this.

“I’ve been proved right. If we’d have escaped relegation this season, it would’ve felt like Groundhog Day.

“We’d have been doing exactly the same thing over and over again.”

White admitted taking the drop could aid Weymouth for their future endeavours.

He said: “The best thing for us is to regroup, go back into the National League South, try and find a bit of structure.

“We do need to find structure, there are issues within the club that need to be sorted.

“Then, we’ve got to find a way to generate more money. We need the town to really get behind us.

“Of course we want to come back up again, why wouldn’t we?

“I think this league is tougher and bigger than League Two. We played Notts County on Saturday, Wrexham (yesterday).

“We’ve tried, we’ve survived last season. This season, I was hopeful we’d do better and we started quite well at the beginning.”

He added: “It’s been the teams around us we’ve struggled against.

“It’s a blow but we’ll sort it. But it’s been a fantastic ride. When I took this over four years ago we were in the Southern League.

“It’s been fun, an experience, and we’ve learnt a lot.”
