WEYMOUTH goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons has highlighted the impact of goalkeeping coach Jason Matthews on his performances, insisting 'he’s put me at ease massively,' ahead of Saturday's clash with Solihull Moors.

The Terras will be kicking off against the Moors at the Bob Lucas Stadium tomorrow (3pm) in a Vanarama National League fixture.

Fitzsimons, who counts Notts County and Chesterfield among his former clubs, has chalked up more than 40 appearances for the Terras this season.

He has often shone with a number of big saves at important times in games, keeping the Terras in a selection of matches.

And the 27-year-old Londoner credited the influence of ex-Weymouth boss Matthews with the upturn in his form.

He told Echosport: “I didn’t know until he came in that he was actually the manager of Weymouth.

“Jase has been excellent for me. He’s come in, he’s simplified things, he’s put me at ease massively because at the start of the season I was questioning myself.

“I wasn’t where I wanted to be. Jase has come in, he’s on my kind of wavelength in terms of mood and attitude and it’s really nice.”

Fitzsimons has also been working with former Chelsea goalkeeping coach Les Cleevely this month.

“I’ve been blessed in that area, in terms of coaches and guidance,” Fitzsimons explained.

“Believe me, a couple of times I’ve needed it this year. It’s another challenge to face up to.”

He added: “It’s been a collection of things. When we first kicked off, physically I wasn’t where I wanted to be.

“I was a bit heavy and sluggish. I sat down with Brian (Stock, ex-boss) and my agent and I needed to correct a few things.

“It’s hard. I’ve moved from my family home where my missus lives up in Nottingham. I’m not local, I’ve had to (move) my life down here. It’s been difficult.

“We identified that situation quickly, within the first couple of games. Gradually, it’s started to come together within the first eight to ten games.

“It was roughly when Jase came in – he’s put assertiveness into me and confidence. For me that’s all I need – just go out and play the game and enjoy it.

“As everyone does, they put a bit too much pressure on themselves.

“I am that kind of character but if I’ve got someone putting their arm round me and telling me to play, that’s when people get the best out of me.”

Ollie Harfield is in contention for his first start since his ankle injury.

While, Brandon Goodship, Ben Thomson and Sean Shields are all doubts for this fixture.
