WEYMOUTH chairman Ian White is highly likely to step down from his roles at the club at the end of the season, adding he will “probably” depart this summer.

White has served as chairman since becoming the permanent successor to Steve Mills in February 2018, with Alan Pepperell filling in as interim after Mills departed.

White has presided over back-to-back promotions, three trophies and a relegation during his 51-month tenure.

The news comes after the chairman announced an end to the popular Wessex Fantasy Football scheme, which has brought in around £200,000 to the club’s player budget since its inception.

White has yet to publicly confirm his exit. However, after the Terras were relegated by the 6-1 loss to Wrexham he intimated to Echosport that his decision was almost made.

Two days later, Dorset News reported White is “set to step down”, and the chief was then absent for Saturday’s 4-2 home defeat to Solihull.

Echosport understands the Barnet home game on Saturday, May 7 could be the last game he attends as chairman.

He is then likely to step away from the role after Weymouth’s season-ending Vanarama National League game at Dover on Sunday, May 15.

White exclusively told the Dorset Echo: “There will be a decision on what I am going to do. I probably am going to step away.

“I haven’t completely decided yet. It’s hard work.”

White’s reasoning, should he step aside, centres on professional and family reasons.

He has also been fulfilling the role of club secretary since Pete Saxby quit the position in March. Saxby remains at the club as a director and was present for the defeat to Solihull.

Meanwhile, Weymouth will also lose director Mark Golsby this summer after his decision to step away from the board.

If White does step down, newest director Mark Palmer is thought to be a strong candidate to succeed him.

Palmer has worked closely with Wycombe Wanderers, Yeovil Town and Grimsby Town and is highly respected by Weymouth’s board.

He has also been involved with Bournemouth, Burnley and Rochdale and runs an advisory company based in professional football.
