WEYMOUTH will not experiment with team selection in their final three Vanarama National League matches of the season, according to boss David Oldfield.

Southend United welcome Weymouth to Roots Hall this afternoon (3pm).

Tuesday’s 6-1 hammering by Wrexham sent the Terras down to the Vanarama National League South after two seasons in non-league’s top tier.

The unwelcome outcome did at least afford Weymouth four dead rubber games in which to try out new ideas in preparation for 2022/23.

Ahead of Saturday’s 4-2 loss to Solihull, Oldfield made six changes to the side that faced Wrexham – leading to suspicions Weymouth are already planning team dynamics for next season.

However, Oldfield denied this was the case, telling Echosport: “It’s not to experiment.

“We play important games and the league – football itself – is far too important for that.

“We are Weymouth, we need to try and do what we have to do for Weymouth and that will be the reason if we make any shuffles.

“We need some basics and some fundamentals in our football club and we have to work hard.”

Ben Thomson, Brad Ash, Ben Greenwood, Ben Morgan and Matt Buse were all absent from the squad that faced Solihull, while Josh Leslie-Smith and Martell Taylor-Crossdale continue their path to fitness.

However, Omar Mussa and Ahkeem Rose returned after injuries, as did Cameron Murray, Brandon Goodship and Ollie Harfield.

Oldfield said: “There are two or three or four (injury doubts). We’ve had a big injury list for quite a while.

“We do have more players available now. Josh has struggled with his ongoing issue but he’s feeling better and is working.

“The likes of Martell, who has been back in training, and one or two others will filter back and will get some football hopefully before the end of the season.”
