DORSET captain Luke Webb expects his squad to have no difficulty transitioning from 20 to 50-over cricket when they tackle their NCCA Trophy opener at Wiltshire tomorrow (11am).

Webb’s men enjoyed another superb run in the T20 competition, backing up their 2019 runners-up spot with a journey to the semi-finals last weekend.

Unfortunately for Dorset, they came up against a miserly Cambridgeshire attack and were ultimately punished for only making 133-5, losing by six wickets to the eventual runners-up.

However, with much of Dorset’s squad playing regular 50-over cricket in the Southern League on Saturdays, Webb feels his players will be well accustomed to the change in discipline.

Ahead of the clash at Marlborough College, he told Echosport: “We’ve got a team they’re fairly familiar with, so there won’t be any surprises.

“It will all be about who performs better on the day and who plays better over 100 overs of cricket.

“I don’t think it’s too much of a change, everyone’s playing 50 overs anyway. The nice thing is that 20 overs can come at you very fast.

“If you’re in good form, it’s fantastic and you can really capitalise on that momentum.

“For a bowler or batter that isn’t quite there, it runs the other way.

“What the 50-over competition does give you is to take your time a bit more and have more of a canvas to express yourself, build an innings or bowl a really good spell.

“It’s not so much the thick and thunder of 20-over cricket but it’s still white-ball and we should be ready to go.”

Reflecting on the T20 finals day loss, Webb said: “It was obviously disappointing but there were four good teams there.

“On the day, we didn’t step up to the level required to win the competition. Cricket-wise, we didn’t get enough runs. A par score would’ve been around 150, 160.

“It showed, we did a good job to take it down to the wire. If we’d had a few more runs to play with then we’d potentially have made a bit more of an interesting game.

“It’s disappointing but still so proud of a young team to get so far in the competition. We can look back positively.”

He added: “They bowled pretty well at us. A few batters got good starts early, then we lost our openers in quick succession and it took a while for the new batters to get going.

“We did keep wickets in hand but probably didn’t maximise the end of the innings as well as we could’ve. There’s no real blame on anyone.”

Hampshire’s Felix Organ comes into the side, along with Oli Soames and in-form Bournemouth seamer Ollie Breckon, who has taken 11 ECB Southern Premier League wickets this season at an average of 12.64.

England Under-19s skipper Tom Prest, David Scott and Ed Ellis sit out, with the latter still overseeing the team as coach.
