WEYMOUTH have announced the signing of midfielder Xander McBurnie on a one-year contract extension, subject to FA approval.

McBurnie, 24, joined the Terras last summer from National League side Barnet but struggled with injury.

The brother of Sheffield United star Oli made just five appearances for Weymouth, totalling 303 minutes, in 2021/22 after tendonitis issues.

However, he enjoyed a loan spell at Wimborne alongside Ahkeem Rose and finished with run-outs against Grimsby, Southend and during the 2-1 victory at Dover on the final day.

Speaking to the Terras' media team after signing, McBurnie insisted Weymouth is the "right place" for him to continue his career.

He said: “It was a disappointing season both personally and for the club last season, however I’m really looking forward to cracking on now and being able to help the team moving forward.

"I feel confident that with the rebuilding currently going on at the club it is the right place for me to be.

"Hopefully we can give the fans a team to be proud of this season as they stuck with us through a tough period.”

Boss David Oldfield expressed his delight at securing the "influential" McBurnie.

He added: “We are delighted to announce that Xander has agreed to sign again at Weymouth.

"He was influential towards the end of the season and showed his desire to play.

"He’s one who can help drive the group on and help fulfil his potential and ours. We look forward to working together again.

"Welcome back, Xander!”

McBurnie joins Tom Bearwish in having agreed second seasons with the Terras, who have also contracted Tom Blair and Rose for 2022/23.

Omar Mussa and Sean Shields also have deals for the coming campaign but Echosport understands their futures remain uncertain.
