WEYMOUTH have confirmed the departure of Sean Shields to National League side Barnet.

Former Notts County, Dagenham and Boreham Wood winger Shields played 72 times, scoring seven goals and registering 20 assists for the Terras.

Shields, 30, joined as a free agent in the 2020/21 season under previous boss Brian Stock.

He was then given a two-year contract stretching to the end of the 2022/23 campaign, although Weymouth told Shields he was free to go this summer.

He has now joined Barnet, who beat the Terras twice last season.

Speaking to the Bees' media team, he said: "I'm thoroughly looking forward to it. I'm over the moon to get it done.

"It was in the pipeline for a couple of months now and towards the end of last season it was first mentioned to me.

"I played under Dean (Brennan, boss) previously for a month when I was younger. I really enjoyed it and we stayed in touch ever since.

"We always touched on the fact that we could link up again and I'm delighted to make it happen."

He added: "A big reason is that I get to move back to where I grew up, I get to play under a manager who knows me, who I did well under before, not to mention that I know quite a few of the squad already."

Announcing his departure on social media, Shields gave a classy statement.

He said: "To the club that gave me an opportunity to reignite my career during free agency, I will forever be indebted.

"To all of my teammates, staff members and supporters, thank you for being an integral part of this chapter in my life.

"My disappointment regarding last season's relegation is still very present in my mind and is a source of frustration that I will harbour for some time.

"I sincerely hope the club can rebuild and return to this level of football as quickly as possible.

"Above all, a special mention to the volunteers who work tirelessly for very little extrinsic reward - you are the real heroes and backbone of this club.

"Thank you for the memories,

"Shieldsy."

Shields is the 13th confirmed exit this summer, with Omar Mussa also close to the departure lounge.

Shields joins Brandon Goodship, Ben Thomson, Andreas Robinson, new Aldershot trio Josh McQuoid, Tyler Cordner and Ollie Harfield, plus Ross Fitzsimons, Martell Taylor-Crossdale, Josh Leslie-Smith, Taofiq Olomowewe, Ben Morgan and Jordan Greenidge in leaving the Bob Lucas Stadium this summer.
