DORCHESTER Town’s new squad played with “freedom” in a “productive” in-house friendly, boss Glenn Howes insisted.

With Bideford cancelling what was scheduled to be the Magpies’ first pre-season outing, Dorchester played two halves of 30 minutes, splitting their squad into home and away kits.

And it was the Yellows who emerged on top as Shaq Gwengwe scored a goal in each half, while Brin Doyle made it 3-0 before a trialist curled home a sumptuous consolation for the Stripes.

“It was a really productive workout,” Howes told Echosport. “It was pleasant to watch and it was played in the right manner with a lot of freedom and a lot of creativity.

“The instructions were fairly limited in terms of how we wanted them to set up, we just wanted them to play their own games and solve their own problems out there.

“They did that and the attitudes were brilliant.”

He added: “The teams were very blended in terms of triallists, the 23s graduates, a couple of 18s out there and the players we already signed.

“They gave a real good account of themselves. There were no session wreckers, nobody struggling to keep up with play – it was really pleasing.”

Dorchester welcome AFC Portchester to the Avenue Stadium in their second clash of pre-season tomorrow (7.45pm).
