DORCHESTER Town slipped to their second pre-season defeat against lower-league opposition in the space of five days as Sholing won 3-0 at the Avenue Stadium.

The Boatmen play one division beneath Dorchester but sailed away to victory over the Magpies as the hosts were left to further lick their wounds after the 1-0 loss to Portchester on Tuesday.

And it was Sholing’s greater finishing power that proved the difference after Glenn Howes’ men missed a catalogue of presentable chances.

Mike Lilley had the game’s first on target in the eighth minute but Sholing responded when keeper Brad Snelling pawed away Owen Roundell’s header.

On a warm afternoon, Sholing custodian Mackenzie Hare saved his side from Shaq Gwengwe’s effort before Alfie Stanley aimed wide from the rebound.

Gwengwe and Stanley then combined for Dorchester’s next attempt, Stanley firing off target after Gwengwe had robbed Sholing of possession.

Both players sent headers wide before half-time and the chances continued for Dorchester as sub Charlie Gunson was denied three minutes into the second half.

Gradually, Sholing began to come back into the game and Snelling had to be alert to repel ex-Poole striker Lee Wort.

However, two minutes later Wort put the Boatmen 1-0 up as Dorchester allowed a cross to find its way to the forward, who buried a finish from close range.

Gunson had an effort palmed clear by Hare but with 20 minutes to go, Dorchester were enraged.

The Magpies felt Gwengwe’s lifted finish over Hare had crossed the line, only for a superb clearance from Lochlan Colquhoun to hook off the line.

Dorchester had made eight substitutions by the 75th minute but were quickly put out of the game by a Sholing brace.

Firstly, Daniel Mason made it 2-0 from a Connor Whiteley ball, taking advantage of the space created by Dorchester’s pursuit of an equaliser.

And Whiteley played an integral role in Sholing’s third on 82 minutes, winning and converting a penalty to give Dorchester an insurmountable task.

To their credit, the Magpies did everything but score in the final stages as calls for a foul in the area on trialist number six went unrewarded, before a similar situation with Keith Emmerson, who appeared to be held in the box at a corner.

Trialist number 15 hit the post and trialist number 10 clattered the bar moments before full-time as Dorchester’s bad luck reinforced the feeling that it was simply not the Magpies’ day.
