WEYMOUTH manager David Oldfield had few complaints after the Terras’ 3-1 defeat by Tonbridge Angels, admitting: “We got what we deserved”.

Oldfield’s side are back in the Vanarama National League South after relegation last season but made an inauspicious return to a division they were promoted from in 2019/20.

Weymouth were 2-0 down in 33 minutes, Tonbridge capitalising on their strength at set-pieces as Femi Akinwande scored from close-range before Sonny Miles netted a dazzling volley.

Keelan O’Connell, one of five debutants in the starting XI, opened his Terras account on 48 minutes but Weymouth’s hopes of a comeback were shattered by Tetteh-Quaye Addy’s late goal.

Speaking to the waiting media post-match, Oldfield said: “I felt we got what we deserved, especially in the first half.

“We were significantly better in the second and started well but lost a little bit of momentum. I’m not so concerned about the third but we have to go again.

“It’s plain to see we have to work forward and we got what we deserved. There are crucial factors within the game that everybody knows we need to make sure we do better in.”

He added: “It’s all about us and our desire and organisation and making sure we defend our set-plays, it’s as simple as that.”

Oldfield also revealed his mixed feelings about Weymouth’s goal. Asked if he felt momentum would shift towards a possible fightback, he said: “I wasn’t sure.

“Our goal frustrated me hugely, as much as their goals – how we scored, the nature of the goal and how we failed to do that afterwards and before in the first half.

“That was a big lesson for us. One of the key factors this season for us is to learn our lessons quickly, whether they come in the first half of the first game or the 25th game.

“We have to take them, look at them and learn from them.”

Weymouth announced goalkeeper Bert White and defender George Ward as new signings prior to the game and Oldfield showed his satisfaction with the duo.

He said: “George wasn’t on for long but he did fine and I thought Bert did all right as well.

“He’s symptomatic of the new boys we have in the group, that we’re not looking or asking for and certainly won’t find any excuses.

“I don’t think Bert was an issue, he’s a good boy and wants to keep working. That is the attitude of the group overall.

“We must make sure we take this on the chin, it stings already and it is what it is. We need to keep ourselves together, keep working forwards and we’ll be OK.”

Weymouth’s next assignment is at home to league favourites Ebbsfleet on Saturday (3pm).
