WEYMOUTH manager David Oldfield shook off the failed attempt to sign Ryan Glover, insisting he cannot afford to worry about the rejection.

Weymouth are understood to have offered a deal to creative midfielder Glover following his release from AFC Bournemouth in the close season.

Glover, 21, was with Weymouth for the latter stages of pre-season and impressed with a goal at Weston-super-Mare and a solid display against Dorchester.

However, he has instead accepted a two-year deal from National League side Aldershot to reunite with former Cherries coach and Weymouth boss Mark Molesley.

And Glover played the full 90 minutes in the Shots' 4-1 home loss to Solihull Moors on Saturday.

Speaking to Echosport following Weymouth’s 3-1 defeat by Tonbridge Angels, Oldfield spoke out on Glover.

He said: “The reality is he’s gone somewhere else. We made him an offer and we couldn’t quite get to where we wanted to get to, that’s what it is.

“We wish him the best, that’s football – it happens sometimes. I can’t afford to be too worried about what happened in the past. We need to make sure we’re looking forward.

“We have tried to make signings this week and didn’t get them done but I’m hoping we can get some.”

Oldfield also confirmed Weymouth’s interest in Portsmouth striker Dan Gifford, the 18-year-old having scored in the 1-0 win over Dorchester.

He said: “I probably wouldn’t like to comment too much because that hasn’t been done, but we’re certainly interested in Dan. He’s another one who is a good player.

“We need to make sure within our group that we have enough within the squad and make sure we’re living up to our potential and get to the levels we need to win football matches.”

Weymouth did announce goalkeeper Bert White and defender George Ward prior to kick-off on Saturday.

Ward has experience with Southern League Central side Bromsgrove Sporting and Loughborough.

Oldfield said: “He is a good person, a lot of potential.

“We need to make sure we don’t fill our squad with potential, that we have people and players that affect us immediately.

“But he’s a good boy, has been at Loughborough University recently and has shown during his time here that he was a willingness and desire to move himself forward.

“He’s got lots of good qualities.”

And quizzed further on the subject of new additions by Weymouth’s media team, Oldfield was asked whether he is concerned about squad depth.

“Yes, I am,” he replied. “I tried to get some through the door last week and it didn’t happen, so we are trying to get some more bodies through.”
