WEYMOUTH manager David Oldfield refused to criticise individual errors in the Terras’ 3-2 Vanarama National League South to Ebbsfleet United.

Oldfield’s men twice came from behind after a howler from keeper Bert White and a needless foul from Nathan Carlyle enabled Dom Poleon and Craig Tanner to score respectively – the latter with a stunning free-kick.

Tom Bearwish had made it 1-1 by finishing off Tom Blair’s low cross, while sub Brad Ash equalised from the spot after he was hauled down in the box.

However, league favourites Ebbsfleet managed to score in the 99th-minute through another Tanner beauty to nick all three points.

Speaking to Weymouth’s media team, Oldfield said: “We were better than last week – we needed to be.

“The boys showed commitment and were more courageous with everything we did. We have to do better, the goals we conceded there are so many ways to prevent them.

“We need to make sure we are learning quickly. It feels different to last week and that’s from the players, the whole group.

“There has been challenges within the club which I can’t particularly comment on but I can comment on the players, they’ve worked very hard, shown their commitment and a willingness to really work together.

“The crowd were fantastically supportive of us after the game, after another defeat, they are fantastic and it was really good to see.”

Speaking to Echosport, Oldfield added that he would not publicly dish out criticism towards White and Carlyle.

He said: “We all make mistakes, myself included, there’s no doubt. I am critical at times in the media and certainly behind closed doors of things we need to do better.

“But we very rarely criticise for individual error. It happens – we whack it over the bar, we smash it wide, we miss a tackle.

“I thought he showed some character to come back, Bert, and made some good saves during the game.

“It would be not fair to single (them) out. It’s the whole group.”

Weymouth will hold a fans’ forum at the Bob Lucas Stadium this evening (7pm).
