DAVID Oldfield called for Weymouth to continue causing problems for teams in the final third, ahead of a first-ever meeting with promoted side Worthing tonight (7.45pm).

Weymouth will hope their third straight home game in the Vanarama National League South yields their first points, following consecutive defeats to Tonbridge and Ebbsfleet.

The Terras’ performance against Ebbsfleet was a vast improvement on the loss to Tonbridge and gave Oldfield cause for optimism ahead of hosting Worthing.

He told Echosport: “It will be a completely different game, I know Worthing are a really good side.

“We’ve got one or two little knocks and niggles and I‘m sure they have too, but it’s a chance to play at home and for us to get into areas and give ourselves a chance often enough to win matches.”

Speaking to Weymouth’s media team, he added: “There’s always optimism. It’s football.

“I went to see Worthing a couple of times in pre-season and they’re a good side. We need to make sure we get our legs back and make sure we’re ready.”

Weymouth are expected to complete their loan move for Portsmouth striker Dan Gifford in time to face Worthing.

The forward, who scored against Dorchester in pre-season, was present at the Bob Lucas for the Ebbsfleet game.

Oldfield told Echosport: “Dan was here and we’re hopeful we’ll get it done.

“He wanted to come here and be around us. That shows a really good attitude from him.”

Ahkeem Rose (ankle) and Xander McBurnie (head) are the Terras’ biggest injury concerns.
