WEYMOUTH 0

WORTHING 3

Colbran 40, Pearce 68, 80

MORE glaring errors cost Weymouth dearly as the Terras slumped to a 3-0 loss to promoted side Worthing in the Vanarama National League South.

Weymouth did everything but score in a vivid attacking display in the first half but they were punished for a series of misses when Joel Colbran headed home from a free-kick.

Weymouth did not get going in the second half and the belief drained away from the hosts as Ollie Pearce netted a double after slack defending on both counts.

The Terras have now lost all three games, conceding three in each match – all at home – in a worrying start to the campaign.

Weymouth were completely unchanged from the side that lost 3-2 to Ebbsfleet United on Saturday.

The only change came on the bench as goalkeeper Harrison Bruton made way for new loan signing Dan Gifford, who came across from Portsmouth.

Gifford showed his predatory instincts with a goal against Dorchester while on trial and how the Terras wished for his clinical edge in a first 45 minutes littered with missed chances.

Weymouth enjoyed the better of the opening ten minutes before Worthing tested Bert White with an imaginative bicycle kick that the teenage keeper was equal to.

Terras pressure resumed when Harry Kyprianou’s fizzing shot needed a good save from Harrison Male at the near post on 15 minutes.

Weymouth continued in the ascendancy as Tom Blair struck a sweet drive inches wide after a clever one-two with Keelan O’Connell.

At the other end, Worthing could only muster a looping header from Callum Kealy – and the visitors were soon retreating to defend Weymouth’s next attack.

O’Connell had two chances inside a minute, exchanging an incisive one-two with Tom Bearwish before bearing down on goal, only for Male to produce an excellent save.

Seconds later, ex-Torquay man O’Connell received possession and rattled the post with a fierce drive that Male this time had no answer to.

Bearwish then aimed a tame shot at Male before Colbran dragged an effort wide.

However, two fouls in succession led to Worthing opening the scoring.

First, skipper Xander McBurnie, wearing a headband after a clash of heads on Saturday, was booked for preventing a Mackerels attack.

Although Weymouth cleared, Blair needlessly gave away a foul on Ollie Pearce in much the same way as Nathan Carlyle did against Ebbsfleet.

Just as Carlyle did, Blair received punishment in the form of a goal when Colbran crashed a header in off the underside of the bar from the set-piece routine.

Weymouth then received a let-off when Pearce controlled smartly before dinking over White and, to the hosts’ relief, wide of goal.

Weymouth did at least end the half strongly, with O’Connell blazing a half-volley over and Dan Matsuzaka heading over via the ground.

After the break, Ofosu and Miles Meekums traded timid shots before David Oldfield reached for two subs.

Gifford was given his debut and Brad Ash came on at the expense of Luke Nippard and Blair.

And the Portsmouth striker took just ten minutes to make an impression when his header bounced away off the post from close range.

However, with Worthing showing improvement on a first half in which they were outplayed, they capitalised on yet another Weymouth error to go 2-0 up.

Ofosu, whose level had dropped noticeably in the second period, was guilty of ball watching as he allowed Jammeh to stroll in and cross against Carlyle with Pearce claiming the final touch.

Weymouth responded by hooking McBurnie for Noa Boutin but Weymouth appeared a shadow of their first-half selves.

Worthing gave Weymouth a massive warning when Callum Kealy scored only to be denied by the offside flag.

And the manner in which they conceded the third will be a red alert for boss Oldfield as Pearce danced past two challenges and shaped a shot past White for 3-0.

Worthing were able to keep the ball as Weymouth looked a beaten side, sub Nodirbek Bobomurodov going close to 4-0 with a deflected shot.

To their credit, Weymouth did probe away for a consolation but it did not come to add insult to injury in a game in which they will wonder how they did not score.
