DORCHESTER Town first-team coach Brian Churchill believes the compelling 3-1 win over Plymouth Parkway was a “true reflection” of the quality in the Magpies’ squad.

Glenn Howes’ men gave a near-perfect response to Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at Truro, the only disappointment being Jared Lewington’s 38th-minute headed opener.

From there, Dorchester thrived off a crowd roaring them on as Kieran Douglas, Callum Buckley and Shaq Gwengwe all notched their first Magpies goals.

They gave Dorchester a second-straight home win – the club’s best start at home since the 2015/16 season produced a run of seven matches unbeaten at the Avenue, yielding 13 points.

Speaking to Echosport, Churchill said: “That was everything we are this season. That was a true reflection of what Glenn’s trying to instil.

“We came in at half-time 1-0 down. We were really passive first half, paid them too much respect, didn’t get in amongst them and got bullied a little bit.

“The message from Glenn was be aggressive, on the front foot and reap the rewards.

“Momentum built second half, we had that shout for a free-kick on the edge of the area and then Alfie (Stanley) hit the post shortly before we’ve scored from a set-piece.

“The crowd played a part in that. They lifted the players and it’s up to us to make the crowd enjoy their football and give them something to shout about. I think we did that second half.”

On the goalscorers, Churchill said: “They all enjoyed their goals. They’re not scored by accident.

“Woodsy (James Wood, assistant) puts a hell of a lot of work into set-pieces.

“Kieran peeling off at the back post was in the script and with (Olly) Balmer we’ve got a trusted deliverer of set-pieces, which we need to take advantage of which we previously haven’t.

“It was a consistent delivery, players know where the ball’s going. It was great for Kieran to get off the mark.”

Churchill revealed Buckley went off-piste for his goal, adding: “I’m not sure what he was doing there!

“He should’ve been attacking the corner in the first place but through a crowd of players straight into the back of the net set us up nicely.

“It was just rewards for the endeavour we showed second half.

“The difference between previous seasons is our bench. The squad that’s been assembled, any of those players we’ve got can fit in the 11.

“When we make substitutions they’re going to impact the game. I’m so delighted for Shaq to get his first goal.

“He’s worked hard and had easier chances and missed, but he enjoyed that one. He got a yellow card for his celebration but certainly enjoyed getting off the mark. We’re all chuffed for him.”

Dorchester also hit the woodwork twice in the second half.

“The game was played at such a high tempo,” Churchill said. “Fair play to Plymouth, they didn’t down tools. They were looking to get back into the game even at 3-1 down.

“That opened things up for us and we had chances to score five or six on another day. The second-half performance was top-drawer.

“They’ve earned that because they’ve put a shift in second-half. They’ve been aggressive.”
