CRICKET fans on Portland will be treated to an evening with Mike Gatting this Friday (6.30pm) as the former England captain graces Dorset for a commemorative club night.

As part of Portland Red Triangle’s centenary celebrations, Gatting will visit the St George’s Centre to tell stories from his time on international duty.

The former Middlesex star is well-known for his part in Shane Warne’s ‘ball of the century’ as the England batter was bamboozled by the Australian’s famous leg-break in 1993.

But Gatting had a distinguished career for England, scoring ten centuries and amassing 4,409 Test runs at an average of 35.55 in 79 matches.

With the white ball, Gatting posted a respectable one-day record, hitting 2,095 runs at 29.50 across 92 games.

Gatting also plundered 36,549 runs in a magnificent first-class career for Middlesex, where his highest score of 258 nestles alongside a lofty 49.52 average and 94 centuries.

Speaking to Echosport, Portland Red Triangle captain Matt Randell said: “I think it’s going to be a really good way to celebrate the club’s 100th year anniversary.

“Hopefully it’s a good opportunity for some players from other local clubs to come along as well and have a good social event, as well as within our club itself.”

Guests will enjoy a drink on arrival plus food from Portland Paella before Gatting shares his stories.

Tickets, priced from £16 for juniors and £20 for adults plus booking fees, are still available from online distributor Eventbrite or the Cards’n’Celebrations shop in Easton, Portland.
