WEYMOUTH manager Bobby Wilkinson is taking things one step at a time ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup third qualifying round clash with Welling United.

Wilkinson’s men welcome their fellow Vanarama National League South side to the Bob Lucas Stadium amid the club’s worst start to a season in its 132-year history.

After ten league games, the Terras have just two points but did ease that pain briefly by recording a straightforward 3-1 victory over Winchester in the FA Cup second qualifying round.

That match doubled as Wilkinson’s first game in charge and Weymouth have since lost 2-0 at home to Dover and Havant.

Wilkinson, though, has seen enough improvement to grow optimism ahead of hosting Welling, who are unbeaten in seven matches.

“I want to win in the FA Cup for the board, the club and the fans,” he told Echosport.

“It’s a distraction away from the league but we’re up against one of the best teams in the league who are flying at the moment.

“It’s not going to be easy, but can we improve? Can we show the same energy and commitment?

“If we can, we’ll have ourselves a chance. We need to carry on momentum. We didn’t win (on Tuesday) but we’re improving.

“I’m stamping my authority on this team. It’s going to be a tough challenge but we want to go into the next round.”

Weymouth are two victories away from reaching the FA Cup main draw for the first time 2007, when the Terras lost 1-0 to Cambridge United in the second round.

Wilkinson added: “It’s been about 15 years but my main priority is getting the club back to believing they can win games.

“It’s one game at a time, believing that we can go out there and wear the badge with pride. That’s not going to change. I expect to win every game.

“Everyone’s seen the boys are starting to believe in the philosophy I’m trying to bring in and I believe that we can win in the FA Cup. I would love to make the first round proper.”

Cameron Murray (hamstring) is out after lasting just 11 minutes of the Havant defeat and Ahkeem Rose continues to be used sparingly on his comeback from an ankle injury.
