PERSISTENT Weymouth Wildcats have not given up hope of fielding a team in league action for 2023 – despite the ban on nomadic teams.

Wildcats have not raced competitively since 2019 in the Midland & Southern Development League (MSDL).

Teams without a permanent home track were then forbidden from competing in leagues by the British Speedway Promoters’ Association (BSPA).

However, Wildcats continue to engage in negotiations behind the scenes as they look to field a team with the aim of promoting the best young talent in the sport.

Co-promoter James Tresadern told Echosport: “We’re still pushing to find out what we can do about fielding an MSDL team.

“With just three teams this season, it’s just making a mockery of the league so we want to get back out into the MSDL if we can bend the arms of the BSPA.

“I don’t know the word ‘no’. I’ll keep on going back and if you keep on banging on the door eventually somebody will open it. That’s what I’m hoping.

“In 2015 we started this project to get the Wildcats back on track and we’ve gone through quite a bit.

“So, ‘no’ to me is ‘not at the minute, but try again in a couple of weeks’.

“We want to get a development team back. Although people say speedway is dead and this, that and the other, there’s still a lot of youngsters who are wanting to learn and give it a go.

“If we can pull through another couple of riders, that’s what the MSDL’s for. They’re not suddenly going to break into a National League team and bag double figures overnight.

“You’ve got to get them used to team riding, riding with three other people, rather than just practice laps.”
