WEYMOUTH boss Bobby Wilkinson revealed his biggest takeaway from a pulsating 3-0 FA Cup third qualifying win over Welling United was the Terras’ clean sheet, adding: “We’ve bullied them”.

Wilkinson has prioritised defensive work since he came in four games ago and the Terras produced their first shutout in his tenure to sink an in-form Wings team previously unbeaten in eight games.

Brad Ash handed Weymouth a 2-0 lead, including winning and then converting a penalty to give Weymouth a two-goal cushion at home for the first time this season.

Stand-in skipper Tom Bearwish drilled a third goal through the grasp of Welling keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle, before Ade Azeez crashed a stoppage-time penalty against the post to compound a poor day for Welling.

Weymouth, though, cared little as they booked a fourth qualifying round spot plus £5,625 in prize money.

Speaking to the assembled media post-match, Wilkinson said: “I’m just really pleased with the result but I’m even more pleased that we’ve kept a clean sheet.

“I know we’re going to score goals because I believe in our forwards. A lot of people have got to understand you’ve got to get it right at the back to start getting it right up front.

“How brilliant was Bradley Ash? How brilliant was the whole team? I dedicate the win to everyone at the football club. No individuals.

“The fans were brilliant, the board have been brilliant to me and the players are starting to believe in themselves now, so I’m getting something right.”

Despite breaking the “duck” of earning his first home win as boss, Wilkinson played down the thrill of the outcome, choosing to keep a level head.

“Never get too high, never get too low,” Wilkinson advised. “It’s so important in football. I’ve got a lot of work to do.

“We’ll start preparing for Eastbourne. I want to get these boys right for training.”

Wilkinson swerved questions about the Wings’ use of force during the game, which saw numerous heavy tackles flying in and a smattering of bookings.

He told Echosport: “I’ve had to adapt to the squad I’ve got. Normally I’d like to go physical against physical.

“I’ve had to adapt it, that’s why you’ve seen me tell them to pass the ball more. When they play against a powerful man, if they can’t move you can create spaces.

“We’ve worked on that, moving the ball short and sharp into the right areas, in and out of pockets and they couldn’t live with our movement.

“We’ve bullied them. Nobody’s bullying us at the moment because we’re standing up and being men.”

On what was a hectic day of player activity, Wilkinson brought in goalkeeper Zaki Oualah, winger Tyler Forbes and handed a Terras return to centre-back Ben Gerring.

However, winger Claudio Ofosu and goalkeeper Ryan Sandford have played their last games for the club due to travel and loan expiry respectively.

Commenting on the new recruits, Wilkinson said: “I wanted to bring Tyler in who came in and did really well. He’s only trained with us once.

“He came in on the bench, we’re struggling with injuries and numbers. That’s why I’m proud.

“You didn’t see me make any excuses. We got the boys out there and whatever will be will be.

“The goalkeeper, you can see the save he made in the first half. He’s a special talent.”
