WEYMOUTH Beach Volleyball Club got their National League Division One home fixtures for the season off to a flying start when they defeated City of Bristol 3-0.

This means they extend their unbeaten start to the season to three matches having won away matches against Black Country and Richmond 3-2 in sets.

Before an enthusiastic crowd at Redlands, Weymouth came out at the start of the match keen to show their supporters just why they have been doing so well so far this season and they did not disappoint in the first set, playing fast and powerful attacking play they raced away to a 12-5 lead.

The attack was led by the outside hitters Lukas Pusvaskis, Liam Tewkesbury and Valdis Baranovs who Bristol struggled to stop.

Weymouth continued to push home their advantage with strong attacks and had set point at 24-11. Weymouth then made some careless mistakes as Bristol saved four set points but Weymouth hung on to take the set 25-15.

The second set followed a similar course to the first set with Weymouth dominating at the net and they pulled out a 11-7 lead with captain Ryan Stout orchestrating the Weymouth attack.

From there, Weymouth maintained their lead and always looked in control taking the set 25-21.

The third set was the closest of the match as Weymouth seemed to lose a bit of concentration and allowed Bristol to take the lead at the beginning of the set.

Coach Simon Golding made a few changes at this point introducing Ollie Smith and Stephen Williamson to the attack and Weymouth gradually pulled back the deficit until the scores were level at 23-23.

Baranovs then showed why he deserved to be man of the match with two massive hits which gave Weymouth the match with a 25-23 win.

This win against Bristol confirmed Weymouth Beach’s claim to be the strongest side in South West England and showed that they could compete with any team in Division One.

Weymouth currently lie in third place in the table and could go top if they win their match in hand.

At the end of the match, Golding reflected on how impressed he has been with the squad this season as they have adapted to a faster method of attack which has given them the ability to compete against the very best sides in this division.

If they can add more consistency to their play they could well finish in the top half of Division One for the first time.

On Saturday, Weymouth are at home against fourth-placed Coventry and Warwick Riga (1.30pm).

This could be a very tight match and it is hoped that another large crowd will turn up to cheer the home side on. Admission is free.
