DORCHESTER gymnast Kirsty Way is targeting gold at the Trampoline World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, this week and insisted: “I know I’m good enough”.

Way, who became European double mini trampoline (DMT) champion for the first time back in June, trains at OLGA Poole, and will compete in Sofia from today to Saturday.

Way became European champion following a faultless display in the final and she returns to action hoping to do the same but on the world stage.

“Year in, year out, I’ve been attending these World Championships, and I’ve not yet won an individual medal,” she said.

“I’ve wanted that medal for years now, but things haven’t always played out and I’ve maybe not always performed at my best.

“This year is no different – I am going to try and win that medal. I know I’m good enough and I’ve got that confidence and experience. It’s just all about making it work on the day.”

Alongside individual success, Way is also hoping to inspire her team to glory. The team won gold at the Europeans, and in Way’s four appearances at a World Championships to date, she’s helped the team win silver on three occasions.

“The big aim and the fun part of the competition is the team final,” Way added.

“Great Britain have had three team silver medals now and won European gold earlier this year. The girls are looking great in training so together I think we can do it.”

Way is one of four gymnasts from OLGA heading out to Sofia, with trampoline gymnast Izzy Songhurst and fellow DMT gymnasts Lewis Gosling and Otis McAuliffe also due to compete.

The support of her club and coaches does not go unnoticed.

“I wouldn’t be a gymnast without my club, OLGA Poole, and my coach, Tom Holman and the rest of the OLGA team,” she confessed.

“It’s not just one person that’s got me to where I am today. It’s a whole bunch of support staff that have made me the gymnast I am today.

“Without them, I wouldn’t be on the GB team. A lot of the time it’s easy to focus on what I achieve but it’s the hard work of a lot of people that has got me to where I am.”

With the Championships now just hours away, preparations are ramping up, and despite some challenges in the build-up, Way is hoping to peak at just the right time.

She said: “Training has been reduced slightly, just due to a small injury, however I’ve still been maintaining my physical fitness.

“I’m still staying as strong as I can off the double mini trampoline, to make sure I’m putting in maximum effort when I am hitting the DMT.

“My passes are there and trained over and over again, so I know how to execute them well. It’s a different build up to what I’m used to, but I think it’s preparing me to compete in the best shape possible.”

Andy Tombs, British Gymnastics Performance Director, said: “It’s been a busy year for the gymnasts involved, with the European Championships in the summer followed by the British Championships in September.

“With competition season concluding with the World Championships, it provides another opportunity for British gymnasts to proudly compete at a major championship.

“Congratulations to all of the gymnasts and coaches selected for what will no doubt be a fantastic event in Bulgaria.”
