WEYMOUTH manager Bobby Wilkinson believes the Terras gave a first-half “masterclass” after thrashing Tonbridge Angels 5-0.

Wilkinson’s men were 4-0 up at half-time as Ahkeem Rose scored a header, Keelan O’Connell lashed home a wonderful half-volley and Brad Ash grabbed a brace minutes before the break.

Ash completed an 11-minute hat-trick in the second half for 5-0 as Weymouth ran riot at the Longmead Stadium.

Victory gives Weymouth ten points from 12 and lifts them off bottom spot, above Hungerford, for the first time since Saturday, August 13.

Speaking to Echosport, Wilkinson opted to downplay the win with Worthing on Tuesday already in his sights.

“It’s just three points,” he insisted. “Just a big shout-out to my staff, players and everyone at the football club.

“Enjoy these moments but it’s just three points – I really mean it when I say that.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m very, very happy as a manager but I’ve already started to think about the Worthing game now.

“We went there motivated to hurt them. There was a big crowd at the start but before we (finished) they’d all left. We absolutely dominated them from start to finish.”

Wilkinson also gushed with pride at Weymouth’s first-half display.

“It’s one of the best I’ve seen since I’ve been a manager,” he confessed.

“It was just absolutely first-class from my players. I was a very proud man going in at half-time but it meant nothing.

“I didn’t even celebrate a goal. Until I get the three points I just can’t enjoy it. I’ve got a job to do and that is to get this club out of the relegation zone. I’ve got a long way to go.

“As a first-half performance it was a masterclass, but it was a masterclass the whole game because we kept a clean sheet as well.”

Only Ebbsfleet have better form in the last five games than Weymouth, despite their placing of 23rd in the league.

Wilkinson added: “Coming off, someone said to me we’re second in the form guide.

“That in its own right is incredible. Not that it means anything but it might mean a lot to the fans to be second in the form guide.

“People think we can’t do it but no problem, we’ll keep believing in ourselves and try to win games of football.

“I’m pleased for everyone at the club. Now they can see their football club is off the bottom.

“It doesn’t mean anything to me. We’re one step closer to where I want us to be. We’ve got a lot more hard work to do.

“It’s one step, we’ve got another thousand to go. I won’t stop until I get us where we need to get.”

Finally, Wilkinson lavished praise on Ash after the striker scored his tenth, 11th and 12th goals of the season.

“He’s a special player,” Wilkinson said. “I absolutely love working with him. He’s a winner and he wants to do well for this football club.

“He wears the badge with pride and when you’ve got those sorts of players you make sure they play with a smile on their face.

“I knew goals would come. They weren’t going to overnight but his three goals were unbelievable. He deserves all the plaudits.”
