DORCHESTER Town endured Boxing Day blues at the Black Gold Stadium as Poole Town ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in their Dorset derby.

The Magpies were under pressure from the off and found themselves 1-0 down on 35 minutes when Tony Lee converted a one-on-one chance.

Lee then drew a foul from Kieran Douglas for a penalty eight minutes later, for which Douglas was dismissed, and Lee scored from 12 yards for 2-0.

And Toby Holmes got in on the act eight minutes from time to inflict a rare defeat on the Magpies.

Going into the game, victory would have drawn Dorchester level with Poole and boss Glenn Howes, a former Dolphins player, made just one change to the starting line-up that began the superb 1-0 win over Truro before Christmas.

Jordan Ngalo picked up a hamstring injury in that game and was not fit enough to play any part at the Black Gold Stadium.

Torquay’s Alex Moyse was consequently promoted to the starting XI in what is scheduled to be his final loan game as a Magpies player.

The only other change saw under-23s goalkeeper Harry Dillon fill the void left by Ngalo on the bench.

Dorchester lived dangerously early on as Poole striker Holmes, on his birthday, rattled the bar with a header against his former club in the eighth minute.

Poole then guided a header wide from a free-kick near the touchline and Dorchester survived two cheeky penalty shouts when Emmerson and keeper Ryan Hall won their challenges fairly against Wes Fogden.

Dorchester responded when Charlie Gunson whistled a shot wide of the post from 20 yards, which proved to be the Magpies’ best effort of a game that quickly turned sour.

Causing Dorchester all sorts of problems from long balls, it came as no surprise when the direct route helped put the Dolphins 1-0 up on 35 minutes.

Holmes won the flick-on and set another former Magpies striker Lee in on goal, finishing clinically past the onrushing Hall.

Dorchester then had Hall to thank for a big save as Lee escaped one-on-one in the 37th minute.

And another long ball prised open Dorchester’s defence two minutes from half-time as Lee got goalside of Douglas.

Dorchester felt Douglas won the ball cleanly but Lee's tumble left referee Iain Parsons with a decision to make and the official brandished red before Lee expertly sent Hall the wrong way from the spot.

Faced with a numerical disadvantage, Dorchester reacted by bringing off Alfie Stanley for centre-half Louie Slough and the substitute was involved six minutes after coming on, denying Lee a hat-trick with an astute sliding block.

Dorchester made their final change as Olly Balmer came on for Harvey Bradbury but it was Poole who engineered the next chance.

Luke Pardoe was the spark, his inviting cross from close to the byline finding Fogden who swept wide of Hall’s upright.

Poole then sealed the points as more suspect defending from Dorchester gave Holmes a one-on-one and he picked his spot with authority to make it 3-0.

Poole had further chances to extend their lead but were denied by the brilliance of Hall.

Fogden was first up, his effort from inside the area tremendously kept out by the Shots loanee, who then repelled Jamie Whisken’s header from the resultant corner.

There would not be a fourth goal for Poole, whose superiority arguably merited a bigger margin of victory as Dorchester suffered an unusual off day this season.
