WEYMOUTH boss Bobby Wilkinson rued poor finishing as Taunton Town beat the Terras 3-1 at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Wilkinson watched on as Weymouth created a mountain of chances, Luke Nippard blazing over from ten yards and both Brad Ash and Ahkeem Rose hitting the woodwork.

However, even after Rose had cancelled out Zac Smith’s opener, Taunton displayed the greater ruthlessness in front of goal thanks to vicious strikes from Lee Lucas and Nick McCootie.

Taunton boss Rob Dray was sent off after receiving two yellows for apparent dissent, but the Peacocks will care little after booking only their second away league win in ten games.

Speaking to Weymouth’s Ted Slocombe post-match, Wilkinson said: “It’s frustrating because we’ve had 20 chances and they’ve had three and scored all three.

“If you don’t put the ball in the back of the net you don’t win games of football, but very proud of the way my boys kept digging in.

“We kept moving the ball fast and sharp. You’ve got to give them credit, they’ve locked in and tried to get us on the counter-attack.

“We played really well and didn’t take our chances – by the way we had some clear-cut chances.

“We hit the crossbar twice and missed a few where we’re in the six-yard box. We need to look at ourselves.

“That’s what’s disappointed me, in that they had three and scored three. We didn’t test the keeper enough, we were blazing it over the bar.”

Weymouth felt they should have had a penalty for a block made by Taunton captain Nick Grimes inside the area in the second half.

Wilkinson alleged Grimes had handled. “Blatant penalty,” the former Bracknell boss said.

“He’s threw his arm up, blatant penalty. But guess what? That’s my luck isn’t it?”

McCootie was involved in an unsavoury incident with Tom Blair before scoring Taunton’s third, with Weymouth arguing the striker should have seen red for an alleged punch.

Both the nearside linesman and referee missed the confrontation but the linesman on the far side saw enough to give yellow.

Wilkinson said: “I’m a very positive man but this one’s hard.

“He should’ve been sent off. What I don’t understand is he got a yellow card for it from the other linesman.

“Listen, I spoke about the referee on Tuesday and I ain’t going to do it again. I’m not going to let people say I talk about referees.

“You’ve seen it yourself, you make your own comments on it. Don’t involve me, I’d get in trouble.”

Weymouth travel to Taunton for the return fixture on Friday (7.45pm).
