The evening was led by former Terras Radio presenter Ben Ashelford as Weymouth fans packed out the main bar.

Weymouth CEO Paul Maitland hailed the evening as a much-needed dose of positivity and hinted a players’ reunion evening could be on the cards in future.

He told Echosport: “The hall of fame was a great night. It’s such an important event to remind ourselves, particularly after the last year we’ve had, of more fond moments.

“It was great to have Tony here, he was away on a pre-engagement and changed his flights to come back a day early and travel down from the north to be with us.

“It tells you everything you need to know about his affection for the club.

“It was just a great occasion. It was a great opportunity to look back and for them to see each other after a long period of time.

“They’re already badgering me for a players’ reunion day, which I think is a great idea and exactly what we’ve been talking about as a club.

“Hopefully in the new season we’ll look to get something off the ground where we invite ex-players in for the day.

“There’s a lot of stories that I’ve never heard at Weymouth. You can see the regard those players are still held in but also the regard they hold the club in.

“It was a really heart-warming exercise and really good to have it back. It’s something we must keep having.”

On the pitch, Weymouth visit Havant & Waterlooville this afternoon (3pm).
