DEJECTED Weymouth manager Bobby Wilkinson insisted the Terras “gave everything” after seeing a 1-0 lead overturned by Hampton & Richmond Borough.

The 2-1 defeat puts Weymouth in grave danger of falling through the Vanarama National League South trapdoor, seven points from safety with only nine to play for.

Realistically, the Terras would need to win all three remaining games and hope one of Dulwich Hamlet or Dover lose all of theirs.

Weymouth have chucked away 1-0 leads with alarming frequency this season and they did so again after Brad Ash’s 21st goal of the campaign.

The Terras were ahead at 77 minutes before Alfy Whittingham’s deflected strike and Ruaridh Donaldson’s 89th-minute winner all but ended their hopes of staying up.

Speaking to Echosport, a despairing Wilkinson said: “Everyone’s disappointed. There’s not much I can really say.

“The lads gave everything but it was a game of two halves. First half we were outstanding and second half we just went too negative being 1-0 up and they were pressing.

“It’s a hard one to take. We should’ve gone in 3-0 up at half-time but that’s been our season.

“We were trying to hold on to the lead but we got caught with two sucker punches. That’s football.

“There’s no blame culture. We’ve been beaten, we go again. The boys gave everything and we just have to prepare for the next game.”

With Weymouth now needing to win all their remaining matches and hope for favours from other teams, Wilkinson maintained his intention to fight until the last whistle.

He said: “I’m a fighter, I’ll always keep fighting. It’s even more difficult now but let’s prepare for the next game.”
