DORSET captain Luke Webb hopes his side can show off their exciting brand of attacking cricket against Wiltshire at Dorchester tomorrow (11am).

Webb’s men beat Buckinghamshire by three wickets at the Rec last season.

And with qualification for the NCCA Trophy quarter-finals already assured, their 2023 fixture against Group Four leaders Wiltshire will decide who tops the table and earn a home last-eight draw.

Speaking to Echosport, Webb outlined his anticipation of returning to Dorchester and called on Dorset to put on a good show for what promises to be a bumper Rec crowd.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to it, we won there last year and I know the development side played there and put on a good performance earlier in the season.

“We really want to put on a show. Obviously, we’ve already qualified so we can play with freedom and hopefully display some of the really good cricket that we’ve played around the country recently.

“Hopefully we can do it in front of more people that are invested in Dorset cricket and play some entertaining cricket for everyone.”

Webb insisted Dorset will be going all out to top the group, with the carrot of a home quarter-final draw at stake.

He said: “There’s still a big incentive to win, top the group and get a home draw but really you just want to win because it’s another game of cricket.

“Hopefully it’s a really good wicket. I’m really excited to turn up and hopefully both batters and bowlers can get the most out of it.

“It’s nice to be in a game where you’re fighting for the top of the group. The table doesn’t lie and we’ve both qualified.

“Also, it will be fiercely competitive with an incentive on the line.”

Webb was also complimentary towards Wiltshire, adding: “They’re a fantastic team.

“They’re dangerous and we’ve already played against them (in the T20). In the second game they thoroughly outplayed us.

“So, I don’t think anyone will take any side lightly.”

Dorchester chairman Mark Derrien has also overseen preparations for this game, which have included a £10,000 levelling of the square and the purchase of an electric mower, highlighting Dorchester’s commitment to green cricket.

Groundsman Jim Ryall has also been hard at work, busy with the extra preparations that go into a National Counties surface.

Derrien said: “The hard work has been the last three years, we’ve had to get the square and facilities up to (National) Counties standards. That’s the difficult bit.

“Dorset have seen our new square and hopefully we’ll have a higher-scoring game as opposed to last year and it will be a better spectacle for the public, who always come out massively for this game.

“With the weather forecast set fair I think we’re going to have a good turnout to watch an excellent game.

“Now you look at the teamsheet and there are some absolutely brilliant players, you’ve got the Eckland brothers and people like Sam Young from Somerset.

“These are proper first-class fantastic cricketers who are brilliant to watch. It’s going to be a really good standard and we’re really looking forward to it.”

Hampshire all-rounder Ross Whiteley could also feature, along with Sussex star Brad Currie who recently went viral for an outrageous flying catch in the Vitality T20 Blast this month.

Dorchester captain Jon Legg, a former Dorset player and a regular fixture in the county’s second string this season, added: “It’s exciting times.

“Jim has done a fantastic job as ever with the pitch. We’ve had some high-scoring games, so it’s exciting to have Dorset come to Dorchester.

“Hopefully plenty of people come on down to watch and support.”

Admission and parking are free, while Dorchester’s clubhouse bar will be open and food is available from Fire House Pizza.
