DORSET will face an acid test as to their progress when hosting reigning champions Berkshire in the NCCA Trophy quarter-finals at Wimborne tomorrow (11am).

Luke Webb’s men have fostered an exciting, aggressive style of cricket on their way to topping Group Four.

However, they now come up against the winners of the past three editions, and seven-time victors in all, who finished second in Group Two to Hertfordshire.

Faced with a formidable opponent, Webb remains steadfast and stressed Dorset will not stray from their trusted methods.

He told Echosport: “All the teams left in the competition will be strong and obviously Berkshire didn’t win their group which is why we’ve ended up being paired against them.

“I wasn’t too worried about who we were going to face. Berkshire’s history in the competition speaks for itself but we’ll be focusing on what we do, worrying about our own game.

“You want to test yourself against the most successful sides and Berkshire is a really good test for us.

“But, again, it would’ve been a good test no matter who we played. Once you get into the knockout stages of a competition you’re playing, it’s sides that deserve to be there.

“My main focus is making sure the boys go out nice and relaxed, enjoy themselves, and play the entertaining cricket we have throughout the group stage.”

Webb added: “Nothing will change. I’m sure those at Dorchester that were watching saw that we tend to be quite relaxed, enjoy each other’s company and just let our cricket do the talking.

“That’s when we play at our best.”

Dorset have question marks over the fitness of seamer Toby Pattemore, while Hampshire all-rounder Felix Organ comes in for star batter Sam Young (unavailable).

Webb said: “Toby obviously couldn’t complete his set of overs at Dorchester, so he’s going through fitness testing.

“The final 11 will be dependent on whether he gets through his fitness tests or not.

“Sam is unavailable unfortunately but we have Felix coming in and not much needs to be said on what a great asset he is to the team.”

Having young cricketers of Organ’s calibre to come into the side is a potent luxury for Dorset this season, one not lost on Bournemouth batter Webb.

He said: “We’ve got a group of around eight or nine that tend to be pretty set in stone. We like to have faith in guys and keep consistency throughout the season when we select teams.

“We’ve got that group that tend to be around every game and depending on other commitments we’re able to adjust one or two here and there.

“The proof’s in the pudding for this Sunday. Not having Sam is a blow to any cricket side he’s a part of, but being able to bring Felix in really softens that and strengthens the spin department at the same time.”
