WEYMOUTH Hockey Club wrapped up the 2022/23 campaign with their end-of-season awards.

A wide variety of awards were handed out to the Seasiders’ star performers, with Joe Gould, Katy Stone and Megan Ellis claiming respective men’s and ladies’ players of the season.

Most improved accolades went to Sam Senior and Elfie Radford-Wilson, while the contribution trophies were dished out to Ben Wright and Alice Craven.

Club contribution award went to Simon Ellis, while K Hall and G Ridgewell picked up the walking hockey award.

Matt Underhill and Tam McHale were respective winners of the coaching and umpiring awards.

In the youth section, junior player of the year went to Leah Johnston.

Hannah Gould, Mia van Egdom and Oli Clark were all recognised as under-14 players of the year, with Shannon Coughlan and James Saunders the most improved.

Saskia Dart, Ella Greer and Ted Russell claimed under-12 players of the year and Sophie Senior, Martha Backwell, Max Davey and Frank Turner were heralded as the most improved.

Isla Makin, Poppy Russell and Daniel Jeram clinched under-ten players of the year, while Mimi Loasby and Fraser Dart were the most improved.

The individual achievements come after the first complete season on the brand-new artificial pitch with new shelters for the players and new LED floodlights.

The men’s team finished second to clinch back-to-back promotions, the ladies first team finished mid-table and the ladies second string had a trickier season, finishing bottom of the table.

Weymouth’s junior section continues to flourish and grow with friendly matches played on Sundays at under-14, under-12 and under-10 level.

The under-ten girls and under-12 boys were runners-up in the county tournament which qualified them for the West Regional tournament in Bristol, representing their club and county with pride.

Weymouth’s walking hockey section is growing all the time and continues on a Thursday evening.

Weymouth are now looking ahead to the 2023/24 season and are hosting a block of one-hour, free Back2Hockey sessions on Wednesdays from the 9th to the 30th (7.15pm).

New members aged 13+ are alternatively welcome to join pre-season mixed training on Wednesdays throughout August (7.30-9pm).

Ladies training starts Tuesday, September 5 (7.30-9pm) with men’s one day later at the same time.

Juniors begin the week commencing Monday, September 11th from 6 to 7pm.
